Just to be clear. Bill Clinton was impeached in the House of Representatives. This is the definition and the official word on the whitehouse's government website.

Let's call it like it is. He was not impeached because of the sex (or near-sex). He was impeached because he and Vernon Jordon had asked Monica to lie to Paula Jones' lawyers. That is crimal. That is obstruction of Justice in Paula Jones sexual harassment suit. Bill Clinton is a criminal.

I don't know where this discussion thread will spin off to.
I can think of 4 directions.
  • Denial
  • Refusal to believe that is a big deal
  • Old History and does not impact Hillary's possible presidency because Hillary did not have anything to do with it (ironically, this is not true).
  • Bush is worse (dispite what the press wants you to believe this is not true either).
I have issues with each of these points. I will wait and see which one gets picked.

I wasn't aware there was any misunderstanding on this point.

Yes, Clinton was impeached in 1998 by the House of Representatives. Constitutionally, only the House can bring Articles of Impeachment against a President--so I'm a little lost as to who else could have done so.

Since we're discussing impeachment, Andrew Johnson was also impeached, in 1868. This was actually the second attempt to impeach Johnson; the first one in 1867 failed by a vote of 108-57.

Did you really think that anyone around here wasn't aware that Clinton was impeached, or didn't know what the word means? It sounds like you just found out, and simply had to rush a thread into production making this bold proclamation.

OK, I'll bite. How did Hillary have something to do with it, and how does it impact her possible presidency?

Oh, now that you've learned what "impeached" means, you might want to look up "ironic."
 
I've always (well, not really always) had a problem with this. As a Canadian with only the Elephant's sleeping companion's knowledge of US Constitutional Law, I don't understand how that, if he was impeached, why he completed his term? Surely he was only accused -- he was not convicted? The law (however you may not have liked the process) said he was not guilty.

Do some people have trouble with dealing with this? :confused:

An impeachment in this context is like an indictment. No, Clinton wasn't convicted.

Last time you brought this up because you seemed to be trying to find something unseemly about Bill Clinton issuing pardons "while impeached."

Because Bill T. hates Clinton, thinks Clinton was a bad boy (at best, I would go with he chose to do something more than twice that I would not choose to - but I do not really give a crap because his bad idea did not get over 2000 Americans and a lot of Iraquis killed) and wants to be sure we all know it and remember it. Did I say that? No. He was impeached for trying to get out of it, which was dishonest and, far worse, impolite to the lady. If someone's nice enough to blow you, the least you can do is not go on camera and call her "that woman". It was intolerably rude. But not very many people died over it. Congress didn't even care enough to go beyond impeachment.

My point is that it's over with. If someone wants to make a big deal about honesty on the part of the president, well, shouldn't they be busy hounding Bush? He's still in office, at least. Why bother beating what is a thoroughly dead and decayed horse?
