what old languages do you guys know? im learing koine greek, atm to read the NT. i was wondering how long it takes for you guys to grasp a dead language

Well after 44 years I regularly “murder” English so it’s almost a dead language.
Learning to read the bible in Greek and Latin didn’t stop Darwin from advancing science; I say go for it

Dead languages? Lets see...

Pascal, Algol, Fortran, Asa, and yes, even Cobol.

That would be "Ada", youngling. And Cobol is actually an acronym, thus: COBOL. Oh, and I speak them all...fluently.

Haha, just testing you!

Just kidding... But it's not my first language, so I'm allowed the occational spelling error ;)

occasional :p

And English is my second language as well, but I'm not excusing my mistakes (and rest assured I make a hell of a lot of them) because of that. If anything, I work even harder trying to avoid them. ;)

Ditto. That's why I get so sad seeing native English speakers butcher their language.

Actually, it is not shorthand. That is a language all its own.

It is called lazy.

Ass.

Ancient Greek, Latin, I'm very bad at both of them.

did you teach yourself or take classes? im thinking about learning older forms of greek later, but im not sure how much easier they would be after knowing koine

Three years of Latin in high school, two years of Ancient Greek in college.

Why?

I also had two years of Greek in college. Or was it three? Anyway, the usual course of study seems to be to learn Attic as a basis for understanding Koine. I recall Koine being easier, for some reason. Maybe because I'd been learning Attic. You should expect to spend a lot of time studying if you want to learn it, but a Liddel and Scott lexicon will ease your progress toward acquiring a basic reading knowledge. I wish I had one.
