We've all seen the 'Political COmpass' Quiz that gets linked here from time to time. I found this Political Typology Quiz after hearing about it on NPR. It breaks up people into a different set of categories than the compass quiz, three that are basically conservative, 3 that are basically liberal and three 'other'

It has me as a 'Disaffected' (one of the 'other' categories) much to my (non) surprise. Though it says that Disaffected tend not be be interested in political news and that's definately not true in my case.

^#%@. @$$#. I'm apparently a Liberal.

No, no. I'll take myself off to the camp, thank you.

That was the whole point of the quiz you know. To find out who gets on the first boxcar...

I do actually see myself as "socially liberal, financially conservative," because I think that certain "liberal causes" like education, a better enviroment, and some kind of universal healthcare are good, but the money needs to be spent effectively and with as little red tape as possible.

Alas...

Can I ride on the last boxcar? It's more fun.

These days I tend to think that that particular geographical fact is unfortunate. ;)

But you know what I mean: it only has merkans in mind, the USian kind.

The first time I took the test it came back Liberal.

The second time I took the test, I changed my answers to the last two questions from Democrat to Republican, then from Liberal to Conservative, and the result was "Conservative."

The third time I changed the last two answers to "Independent" and "Moderate" and I came back as "upbeat."

Great test. It says you are what you think you are 100% of the time.

Great fun.

I found it very interesting that "independent" was in between Democrat and Republican options. There is definitely an implication by these pollsters that they think "independent" means "center" in terms of placement on the political spectrum. Now think Ralph Nader - he's independent - but would you put him in between Democrat and Republican on the politcal spectrum? Maybe there's some right wingnut counter example as well.

Maybe this is just an attempt to bastardize the notion of independent.

Nader in 2008!!!!

Enterpriser.

Although, in this quiz, as in most of this ilk, there were some questions that I thought were unclear, and somewhat nebulously
worded.

For example:
- Immigrants today strengthen our country because of their hard work and talents [] [] [] [] Immigrants today are a burden on our country because they take our jobs, housing and health care

I assumed this to mean actual immigrants, not illegal aliens (and the PC group likes to equate them, or at the least, blur the line between them.)

- We should all be willing to fight for our country, whether it is right or wrong [] [] [] [] It's acceptable to refuse to fight in a war you believe is morally wrong

It makes a difference in my answer upon the situation. In the case of an evil entity attempting to take over the world, then I'm in the camp of 'we should be willing to fight', but in the case of a country performing a military act that is clearly immoral (genocide, etc), then I'm in the 'it is acceptable to refuse' camp.

Some of the environmental questions were also nebulous. For example, I think that government regulation of toxic emmisions from factories (and other entities) is a good thing, but, on the other hand, I think that the pendulum has swung too far in cases of stopping construction of a much needed road because there's some bird that needs to move its nest 100 yards.

You've got a pretty damned good deal going on, geography-wise. You're bordered by a single country that you won't ever have a military conflict with, is politically stable and economically prosperous, and is your largest trading partner. In the scheme of things, that's about as good as it gets.

This quiz is ridiculously inaccurate and relies on the faulty "left-right" single axis.

Great test. It says you are what you think you are 100% of the time.

*chuckle* I decided to do a further test. I answered all the questions to the Far Left of the Axis. Then I said I was a strong Republican. The test said I was a Social Conservative, one of the three strong backbone groups of the GOP. Regardless of what it says, only the last question makes a difference. Sorry, Mycroft. I guess you were right, but I had to see for myself. Guess I'm just a skeptic......

What a post to have for my 400.....man I post too often...

My results: Liberal

I disagree with Mycroft and Clarsct. I put together a few of my own little tests, for the record I used Sean Hannity as my control to compare results:
* When I answered all of the questions as Sean Hannity, then checked the results. The results were scored as Enterpriser.

* Then for the final two questions I marked "Strongly Democrat" and "Very Liberal". The results were scored as Conservative Democrat.

* I changed the final two questions to "Independent", and the first question to "strongly agree". The results were "Conservative Democrat". Anything more changed the results to "Enterpriser".

* A few variations, in which I was able to achieve all the different typologies.

I think the final two questions are essentially no different the preceding questions, the test apparently does score with equal weight all of the preceding questions.

Like all tests this is poorly worded. I can strongly agree (disagree) with the alleged opposites.

Government regulation of business is necessary to protect the public interest vs. Government regulation of business usually does more harm than good.
I strongly believe that the government should regulate business but I also strongly believe that most of the government current regulation are harmful.

The government should do more to help needy Americans, even if it means going deeper into debt vs. The government today can't afford to do much more to help the needy.
I think the government can do more to help the needy and save money also because our welfare programs tend to be expensive and counter productive.

In any case, it says I am liberal even though I said:
1) Government is almost always wasteful and inefficient
2) The government today can't afford to do much more to help the needy
3) Most people who want to get ahead can make it if they're willing to work hard.
Or are they using the British definition of liberal (e.g. libertarian)?

CBL

Most people who want to get ahead can make it if they're willing to work hard
Hard work and determination are no guarantee of success for most people
The intent of the question is somewhat apparent, but they're not really mutually exclusive...
