Are people who drive around with American flags hanging off of their cars better Americans than the rest of us?

In their minds it is a way to combat terrorism. When terrorist see so many americans driving around with noisy, flapping flags, they know they're dealing with strong, tough, god-loving, moralistic, patriotic people. This is driven home even more so if the vehicle is some big gas-guzzling behomoth.

To answer your question... Yes Billy, they are better Americans than the rest of us.

Why, are they saying so?

Put one on your car and report back on the effects (increased wind drag excepted, naturally).

Yes they are better Americans than the rest of us. The only way to be better than them is to get a flag, a pisces symbol, and a my president is charles heston bumper sticker.

Personally, I've never understood the need some people have to dress up their cars to reflect their beliefs, political doctrines, or their kids grades.

Not necessarily, and I say that even though I am one of those people.

The current situation means I can no longer pick out my car in a big parking lot as the one with the flag.

Well, that's the question isn't it? What precisely are they saying. What is the point that is being made? Now, if one were to be riding around, say, Bagdad with American flags hanging off of one's car - now that would be a statement.

I don't see how it's any more "meaningful" than parents opining on their kid's honor roll status, people with Yosemite Sam "Back Off" mudflaps or anything else. I myself flew one after 9/11 until it became too ratty. I'd never put a sticker on my precious Buick, but a flag is a lot easier. These are things people want you to know about them, and the anonymity of brief encounters on the road makes it easier than explaining one's views at a cocktail party.

Speaking of the honor roll stickers, it seems to me that you can track the decline of western civilization with those friggin' bumper stickers. A few years ago, only honor roll parents got them (the stickers lasted longer than the kid's grades, I'll bet)... now, it's "My Child is a Good Citizen at Blahblahblah Elementary" and crap like that. Another sad example of grade inflation.

I only wish more of these "better" Americans would learn when to retire the wind-torn and ratty remains of the flags they hang from their antennae.

That's what I did. But you see flags past their prime everywhere, even on government buildings. A sad state of affairs. I could do with fewer flags flying over car dealerships if it meant better-looking (and more respectful) displays.

Of course, this is coming from a guy who called reginald kcin to task for being a snob about what people wore to visit Reagan. Maybe he was on to something after all...

A Jack in the Box antenna topper is the answer. Works for me. But then, that DOES mean I'm better than the rest of you.

I'm an Atheist (more or less), and I've got one on my V-10, 10 MPG Ford Excursion Ltd. I also served my country as a soldier for 7 years in the Army as well.

This doesn't make me a better American than everyone, just those who haven't done a damn thing in support of their country, but love to complain about the way things are.

To clarify a bit: if you're direcly participating in the democratic political process, regardless of your beliefs, you're contributing to the country.

I didn't mean to imply that those who haven't served in the military haven't contributed anything. But simply going out and voting every so often isn't enough either.

The back of my '97 Saturn SC2 is littered with bumper stickers, mostly for obscure bands that only a few dozen people have heard of. On the right side of my car, I put a Satan sticker, which looks like a Jesus Fish-Darwin Fish sticker, but has a pointy tail, horns, and reads "Satan" inside the body. I'd often see people pull up behind me at a stoplight, lean forward to stare at my stickers, and after their eyes shifted to the right, they'd shake their fist at me from the car. Admittedly, most people just saw it and laughed, but there were a few who were obviously offended.

After 9/11, I got an American Flag sticker (the only color sticker on my black car), and put it on the left side of the bumper. Now, when people behind me stare at my stickers, I notice that the ones who look right and get annoyed then look left, see the flag, and just sit back with a mildly disgruntled look on their face. But there hasn't been any more fist shaking since putting the flag on the car.

I don't have much to say on this topic except to say that, Phrost, after every post you make I like you more. Keep it up and I may fall in love with you!

(In a platonic kinda non-gay way that is.....)

Edited to add a Seinfeldian; "Not that there's anything wrong with that."
