I want to start keeping up to date with recent scientific discoveries and technology and was wondering if any of you could steer me toward the most credible magazines out there. I see alot of mags but I assume there's probably alot of crap...

Thanks!!

Science News, www dot sciencenews dot org. A slim weekly publication.
Used to subscribe to Scientific American but my reading has dropped off quite a bit in recent years.

Physics World is pretty good, for physics at least.
New Scientist is usually good, but you need some generous grains of salt to take with their more sensational stories.
Astronomy Now is very good, for astronomy oddly enough, but I haven't really looked at their website, so I don't know how useful that is.

An example from science.com's this week in science
A Cool Way to a Long Life
------
Caloric dietary restriction prolongs life span in a variety of organisms, and in mammals the resultant lowering of core body temperature has been offered as one potential explanation. Conti et al. (p. 825; see the Perspective by Saper) generated transgenic mice that overexpress mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 in hypocretin-producing neurons within the hypothalamus, which lowers core body temperature by about 0.5°C. In the absence of caloric restriction, the median life span of these "cool mice" was about 15% greater than that of their wild-type littermates.

Predicting Changes in Biodiversity

Predicting the effects of environmental change on biodiversity requires an understanding of whether those changes will affect which species occupy a given site, as well as their relative prevalence. Shipley et al. (p. 812, published online 5 October; see the Perspective by McGill) developed a quantitative method based on plant traits to answer these questions and test its effectiveness on a data set from a 42-year process of secondary succession after agricultural abandonment of sites in southern France. Their method successfully predicts community composition and relative abundance with a high level of accuracy.

I'll just chime in to say that I generally agree with what has been said so far. Scientific American is a great one to start with.

I'd recommend taking a look at SEED.

Tagline: Science is Culture. A bit heavy on the psychology, rather than hard science, in my opinion, but a good read none-the-less.

The hardcopy version is extremely slick. Some of the best graphics I have ever seen in print.

It's not a magazine, but New York Times Science Section (comes out every Tuesday) is probably the single best written, most comprehensive source of this type.

Discovery magazine (or is it discover magazine?) is pretty good about discussing breakthroughs and new technology, and covers many different types of sciences, it doesnt go into a lot of depth on the science. I enjoyed reading the ones that were floating around my last job.

Thanks for the great feedback to all! Can't wait to go to the bookstore. I think I will start with Scientific American. Alot of the links look really interesting too. All of the sudden I'm buried with choices - I love it. Your opinions are greatly valued - thanks!
