I've used Norton's for years now. I've never had a problem in the past. However, now I have Internet Security, Go Back, and System Works and well... its draining my system. I tried uninstalling Go Back and System Works and it doesn't seem to make a difference. So, I believe it must be Internet Security as I've made no other major changes.

Anyway, can anyone recommend something better to use? I don't mind paying for good security.

The most recent issue of Consumer Reports (Sept. 2006) gives BitDefender (Standard) its top spot for AV programs. Second is ZoneAlarm Antivirus. Both receive the highest rating for detection. It may be worth a look - any public library would probably have it; I think you have to subscribe to view it online.

No need to pay for most AV programs if you're willing to send off the rebate forms. I've gotten three or four of them for free.

I really like Kaspersky. With Norton, each time you do a system scan, the computer grinds to a halt, it's impossible to do anything else. With this one, you don't even notice.

I like AVG from grisoft for anti-virus, it's free for personal use and has served me well.

I just use the windows firewall for my xp box, but it's behind a hardware firewall anyway.

Gah, naming the 'best' anti-virus program is a little like asking people what their favorite flavor of icecream is. There may be a couple of flavors that seem to be more popular, but there's always someone that likes that obscure flavor that sits at the back of the cooler.

Personally, I use AVG. AOL has just released a free anti-virus program called Active Virus Shield, which is powered by Kaspersky, though I haven't tried it. (you don't have to be an AOL user either)

I've used Norton in the past, but was not impressed. In fact, if I buy a new system that comes with Norton pre-installed, it's the first program I remove when I setup the system.

I've used McAfee, but again was not really impressed. I've also tried AntiVir, Avast!, F-Prot, and Kaspersky, but settled on AVG. Does it catch everything? No, but I'm not aware of any program that will.

I'm on the AVG bandwagon as well. It's FREE which is good, and it works, which is even better.

AVG's sister company at ewido.com have the best anti-spyware programs as well. My kid managed to download a lethal little number called "spy axe" which just took over the PC completely. Norton couldn't find it and a search of Norton couldn't identify it all, SpyBot Killer identified it but couldn't kill it, while ewido knocked it over in about 30 seconds.

10/10 for these guys.
