Elderly Man Dies After Being Punched in Dunkin' Over Racial Slur Confrontation

...

Pujols told police that the man was a regular customer. On this day, Pujols said the man was being "extremely rude" and called Pujols a racial slur. Pujols, who is Black, told police he asked the man to repeat what he said, and the man again said the same slur.

The specific slur was not included in the police report.

Pujols said he then punched the man once in the face, which knocked him out and caused him to hit his head on the floor.

Authorities arrived to the scene to find the 77-year-old victim unconscious and bleeding from the head. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital and placed in intensive care. Two days later, he passed away.

Behind a paywall but from the description it appears that Pujols is going to be going to prison.

Not much more at this link but it does say he was charged:

That led to a manslaughter charge against 27-year-old Corey Pujols, who worked at the store. Pujols told police that the man was “extremely rude” the day of the punch and called Pujols a racial slur multiple times. Pujols is Black.

Anyone else not shocked it happened in Florida? Both sides should have learned more control, but I can't imagine ever punching someone 50 years older than me. No matter what they said; however, I've never had to deal with racism either.

A 77-year-old was rude and used a racial slur. Thank goodness a righteous man was on hand to promptly murder him!

Ok, this has about the most information I can find at a source that doesn't require signing up or a paywall.

Per that source it looks like it started in the drive thru:

According to information released Monday in a Tampa police news release, the man first went through the drive-thru window and became upset about the service. Employees asked him to leave. Instead, he parked his car, went inside the building and began arguing with Pujols, according to police.

Sounds like he was standing his ground. No crime detected, free this man.

Agreed!

From the quote - clear cut murder.

Nah, he's only charged with manslaughter.

Glib comments about Mouthy McSoftskull taking a dirt nap aside, our puncher does seem to be in a bit of legal trouble. Hopefully the racial slurs will be a mitigating factor.

A murder conviction seems unlikely.

I'll have to disagree there. I think they got it right:

...a charge of aggravated manslaughter of a person older than 65, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

He didn't intend to kill him, he intended to punch him in the face. It's not at all shocking that he killed him, I can say that much.

Yea that is only the kind of thing cops are expected to do. Pity the guy in buffalo survived.

People seemed to support Buzz Aldrin when he assaulted someone with at best similar provocation. Clearly he should have been put in prison for that.

Did the person he punched die? Was the person >75 years old? Was Buzz >75 years old?

This isn't a close comparison at all.

To be clear, I’m absolutely against punching elderly people for any reason.

However, ST has a good legal point, if it’s legal to chase down and kill a teenager for walking while black, and it is in Florida, then this should be legal as well.

The guy didn't die but there was not a single charge against Buzz. Buzz was lucky he didn't hit his head wrong and die, but people seem to love focusing on the striking aspect like against Richard Spencer.

Too bad the guy was not a cop and this would be all nice and legal. But Dunkin Donuts staff are held to a higher standard.

Now would not be the time I would chose to test the patience of someone working fast food. They've been having to deal with all the stress of working through an incurable pandemic all while dealing with callous management and belligerent, selfish customers all for piss-poor pay.

This example is obviously an overreaction by our Dunkin employee, and he likely did not intend to kill this piece of ****, but I still imagine there's a bit of catharsis in seeing a racist, bullying customer get put into the forever box for running his bigoted mouth with the wrong one.

Gonna file this one under "guilty pleasure". I know, intellectually, it's not a good thing to have happened, but that won't stop me from partially enjoying it. It's a shame our man will be looking at a serious felony charge.

ETA: Dunkin is a coffee and donut shop. Most menu items are less than $5. Imagine being so mad and racist that you manage to talk yourself into getting killed over a $.89 donut or cup of coffee. An appropriately ignoble end for a racist old man.

Which situation is this? If it's a Zimmerman comparison there was a physical altercation. There wasn't one here.

The old man ****** around and found out, but this isn't comparable to that case either.
