Barney Hill

Its really impossible to say I suppose, but the impression I always had of reading about him was that he was a decent guy who maybe had some mental health issues (depression, stress), who never particularly wanted to be a "contactee" and go on the whole circuit, but placed in a situation where:

(1) He probably did see some strange lights in the sky (which could have been anything), he was driving through the night, maybe he had some kind of "episode".
(2) His wife had a massive interest in the field.
(3) Some unrelated issues that seemed to all tie together (his dog got sick, some damage to his car).

And the whole thing started to twist together into his mind to become something he really remembered as being true (and that's before he starts having hypno-therapy)

To me it's kind of a sad story. I think he died pretty young? And his wife went on to do be a part of the whole UFO thing.

And maybe they really did see something in the sky... but who can say what it was.

Reading the abduction story for the first time it seems pretty over the top.

However I am glad that you are helping document their work as Civil Rights campaigners. I hope their UFO story did not detract from the impact of their far more important humanitarian work.

Interesting story -- thanks. Count me as yet another skeptic baffled at the staying power of the Hill's abduction story, which more or less established the blueprint for such claims, right down to the physical appearance of the aliens. As I'm sure you know, virtually none of it stands up to the slightest bit of scrutiny. And towards the end of her life, Betty Hill was something of an embarassment to the "serious" UFO community, with her increasingly bizarre and impossible tales. However, I think Barney Hill genuinely believed in his abduction fantasy, and probably went to the grave convinced the whole thing was real.

If you look at the interviews from the first one, and associated press, you may see that Barney only reluctantly corroborated his wife's story. The evolution of his own part of the story is educational in itself.

Yes his description of the aliens changes radically and his initial description of the craft comes across as a very '60s' vision of advanced technology.

What was the physical evidence that was examined in the laboratory [which lab. ],and what were the findings ?I don't believe that Aliens,in whatever shape or size, would come here from distant galaxies to pick up a couple driving along a road at night.Highly improbable,if you consider the traveling time involved at below the speed of light[unless they posses FTL.].
Congrats to Barney on his achievements, well done !

Kitty, you write, "Certainly there are charlatans, hoaxers, delusional people, mentally ill people, etc. that think they’ve been abducted by aliens. I’ve met them. But the Hill case is convincing. Something occurred and it appears not to have been perpetrated by humans. My comparative analysis of the hypnosis tapes has convinced me of that."

Could you expand on that?

You are soooo behind the curve! :p The nuts have come, albeit it slowly, to the conclusion that FTL is not likely. (One small win for the education system.) So they needed another way to get the pretty lights in the sky to be from "somewhere else". So now it's "from another dimension". (One small win for The History Channel.)

I have posted on Betty and Barney before in at least one of the MONSTER UFO threads that sometimes clog this forum. I'm too busy lazy to search for my previous posts and all my reference documents are on my lap top that's not currently to hand.

However, someone did a pretty thorough analysis of the story (by, for one thing, actually driving the route they took).

His conclusions that pretty much destroy the story are that (1) no time was "lost" given the state of the roads and the times they recorded. They took as long to drive plus stops as would be expected. And (2) there is a navigation light on a tall tower on the route they took that was visible from the road. Given the winding, hilly road, this light sometimes disappears from view and sometimes appears to be above and sometimes below and sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right.

All the rest is "Recovered Memories".

:th:

Thanks Gawdzilla...Gee, I guess that Battlestar Galactica has a serious problem, damn I been fooled again !:D

You write:

Convincing of what?

It convinced me people will tell any story they're encouraged to tell if they like attention. UFOols often say "Why would they lie?" and I reply "Because they like being 'special'." People just love to be the first one to report that something strange, odd or disastrous has happened. No profit to it that we can easily measure but they do gain a benefit from it, an ego-boost.

Good answer. :) But I think kittynh was the one being asked the question. I'd certainly like to hear her answer.
