From BBC:

An Austrian atheist has won the right to be shown on his driving-licence photo wearing a pasta strainer as "religious headgear".

Niko Alm first applied for the licence three years ago after reading that headgear was allowed in official pictures only for confessional reasons.

Mr Alm said the sieve was a requirement of his religion, pastafarianism.

The Austrian authorities required him to obtain a doctor's certificate that he was "psychologically fit" to drive.

CONTINUES

:D

At last, official recognition for Pastafarians! I thought this day would never come!

That's quite an achievement.

I find it peculiar that New York doesn't require you to take new pictures for each new license, the way passports do. I've been using the same license photo for about twenty years, and it really looks nothing like me anymore.

No. Strictly spoken only Pastafarians are allowed to wear a strainer for religious reasons. Adherents of the IPU (bbhhh) might possibly be allowed to wear a horn on the forehead, as a symbol of the goddess.

Er, not quite. From the article,

"The next step, Mr Alm told the Austrian news agency APA, is to apply to the Austrian authorities for pastafarianism to become an officially recognised faith."

But at least he has established a legal precedence that the religion of FSM is not a cult full of loonies. Again from the article,

"The licence took three years to come through and, according to Mr Alm, he was asked to submit to a medical interview to check on his mental fitness to drive but - straining credulity - his efforts have finally paid off."

Victory for the Flying Spaghetti Monster: Pastafarian's rights upheld.

An Austrian man was allowed to have his driver's license photo taken with a pasta strainer on his head, after asserting that it is part of his religious garb. Due to the request, he was required to submit to a mental fitness test.
What I'm wondering is if individuals practicing other religions are also required to submit to mental fitness tests.
