I have just read three separate reports detailing the speed at which the Australians have stepped up to handle assistance for the tsunami victims. They all emphasize that the Australian effort has been instrumental in getting more aid to the victims faster -- it is making a real difference.

Good on ya.

Also mentioned are efforts by India, New Zealand, Japan, and Spain.

A sincere thanks to the people involved and the citizens backing their efforts.

I note there's also a great big nuclear-powered aircraft carrier now parked off Sumatra that is producing precious clean water at the rate of over one million litres per day, and flying it (and lots of other useful stuff such as medicine) into the affected areas in a continuous shuttle. I don't recall us ever owning one of those, or so many aircraft to do such a huge job, so big kudos to the Yank navy for this humungous effort too. Personally, I couldn't think of a better use for such a piece of hardware...

Indonesia is a country that is just next door to Australia. I have no doubt there is genuine concern for what has happened, but we also want to be seen as a good neighbour.

If I was being a little cynical, as I am surprised at the size of the governments response, it is that we can make up for many years of being a bad neighbour now, and being kept on the outer by Indonesia from ASEAN, even when we did try to be good.
