Atheist to give invocation at council meeting

Council people guided by logic, reason, and science?
There is the same chance that they will be guided by logic, reason and science as they will be guided by god.

But we must have faith brother.
 
I think we should kick all these 'prayer givers' out of the public forums and substitute them with 30 seconds of quiet reflection.

Why do I suspect the council members are being paid by the hour?

I believe that 30 seconds of quiet reflection is simply a tribute to prayer. Much as if a teacher said "Before meals we will fold our hands and bow our heads, although praying is not required "

In this case a tribute to is almost as bad as actually doing.
 
I don't mind people's personal prayers or reflection.
The thing that bothers me is the tact acknowledgment of various religious leader's authority. To let the atheist give an invocation seems just as patronizing.

I can see the point in not wasting time on any of it, but am willing to compromise...
