File under 'What If They Gave A Revolution And Nobody Came.'

On the second afternoon of the conference, Mr. Fetzer gave a speech in one of the hotel salons to a standing-room-only crowd. It began like an introductory lecture in moral philosophy he might have given at the University of Minnesota. He discussed different theories for the origins of right and wrong — moral egoism, utilitarianism, deontological moral rights. Then he came to the emergency.

"The threat we face," he said, is "imminent and ominous." He recommended arming the citizenry.

During the question-and-answer session, an audience member asked whether there might be a way to capture a TV station, to get the word out about September 11. Mr. Fetzer upped the ante on the idea.

"Let me tell you, for years, I've been waiting for there to be a military coup to depose these traitors," he said from the podium.

"Yeah!" shouted some men in the audience.

"There actually was one weekend," Mr. Fetzer went on, "where I said to myself, my God, it's going to happen this weekend, and I'm going to wake up and they will have taken these guys off in chains."

His voice was building. "Listen to me," he said. "The degree of perfidy involved here is so great, that in the time of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, frenzied mobs would have dragged these men out of their beds in the middle of the night and ripped them to shreds!"

"Yeah!" cried a chorus of voices in the audience. "Yeah!"

One of the reasons this member of the citizenry is armed is because of idiots like these.

Hmmmm, 2006. Way to get that revolution rolling morons. :p

I wouldn't take orders from this guy!

"But in our case, we may want to start with girls in wheelchairs, and work our way up."

I wouldn't take orders from this guy!

The only orders that guy is capable of giving are followed by someone telling him to "Please drive around".

Mr Fetzer needs a new jacket. One of those strappy little numbers that come in white and can generally be found in the wardrobes of escapologists and mental health institutions...

I take it that the question of "if these guys are so excited about a coup/revolution, then why aren't they brave enough to initiate it?" has already been couched around these parts, yes?

I'm betting the answer is probably similar to why they don't get together and fund their own independent investigation-- they're all-in for talking about it and proselytizing it, but when it comes to actually expending resources and facing risk they'd much rather have someone else do the hard work.

To quote Yoda: "That is why you fail."

ETA: By the way, what's with the "girls and wheelchairs" comments? Is there a joke I'm just not getting there?

"By God! We are under the most oppressive, evil, and murderous regime ever known to our nation and by heaven I will stand here and complain until somebody else does something about it!!!"

One of the 'We Are Change crowd has been accused of attacking a girl in a wheelchair after he could not harass Bush's daughter at a childrens event. This may not have happened, but what is more telling is how the truthers reacted to news of the event: Rather than apologizing for any problems, they went on the offensive. Bad idea.

I think its mostly in this thread:

Lenin or Mao would laugh themselves silly at Fetzer trying to organize or lead a revolution. The Twoofers could not revolt there way out of a paper bag.
Notice how with it becoming more and more obvious that the Truth Movement has been marginalized to the point where there are no longer on the margins the violent rhetoric has increased?
It would be drop dead funny if I was not afraid that some demented loon would actualy attempt something. 99.99999% of the Twoofers are just blowhards indulging in juvenile fantasies, but three or four of the loners in the movement might hurt someone in some idiotic attempt to be the next Unabomber.

The "Truth Movement" is starting to make me change my opinion about gun control.

I get this vision of Fetzer, Huffing and Puffing, leading (if he can keep up) a group of 30 or 40 ANGRY YOUNG MEN in black shirts, towards a Miliary line of several thousand troops...

silly old man.

Yeah. I think most of them have it in their head that they can be that great leader who rallies their followers to action by merely giving a speech or spreading the word.

However, they don't seem to realize that a movement composed of 80% of these types just isn't going anywhere.

No, no, no, it's:

Euripides?

Yes. Eumenides?

:D

Well, some of them revolt me. Does that count?

Capturing a TV station? Big trouble for them to get into there. Plus, there's no way I let them try to take mine over.

It might be worth it just to watch them try to work out the master control room or even how to operate an autocue.
