in the white house who promised that he would control opec.

Chavez now pushing for $100 a barrel.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4219190.stm

Maybe he will not get it today, but considering our standing in the world
and our leaders OBVIOUS total lack of interest in finding alternative sources
of fuel, why would he not get it soon?

The repugns continue to tell us that our economy is doing SUPPER and millionaires are more abundant then ever, so WHY couldn't our economy support $100 per barrel and why shouldn't Chavez get his way??

Who (or what) are "repugns"? What will the economy be having for supper - fish, chicken, beef? And where? Wouldn't $100/bbl oil encourage energy conservation in the same way the $1/gal gas tax some were pushing for a while back? Why is one bad, and the other good?

The proper owners of oil fields, in a free economy, are free to charge whatever they think they can get away with. Nationalized oil fields are no more free than those owned by dictators in dictatorships.

In any case, competition would still work well -- if domestic competition wasn't hampered by mathematically illiterate people who have problems with a few wrecked square miles of land inside colossal Alaska.

If I were a US oil company, I wouldn't bother fighting environmentalists to drill, or to build new refineries for mandated formulae that they might change in a year or two. **** them, let the price skyrocket until they start losing elections.

wouldn't they be the repub(lican)s ?
Yes. Current slang among the Democrooks is to call them "Repugnicans".

But as to the original post, Bush was a failed oil man. His oil company went under and he had to be bailed out, as he has in every endeavor he has ever undertaken.

I always liked the term "Repugnicans", it rolls off the tongue well, but I'm not fond of "Democrooks". Sounds a little too childish. I was without a good insulting phrase for Democrats until I ran across "Dhimmicrat."

Whoah, hold it right there, killer. Who said that when? I'd like to see a cite.
The idea is that during the 2000 campaign, when OPEC was constraining production to drive up oil prices, then-Governor Bush said that rather than selling out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as the Clinton administration was doing (because Al Gore likes the environment so much, you see) he would instead jawbone those OPEC partners which were closest to the US to stop constraining production.

As it happens, OPEC is not only producing at full capacity, some countries in the cartel are promising to increase capacity and produce at that new, even fuller capacity. But you won't be surprised to learn that the actual facts are at odds with Magyar's alleged point.

Oh, so it's a load of poison down the well. As I suspected. You may as well promise to control volcanoes as promise to control OPEC. Dumb though he may be, apparently Bush isn't as stupid as Magyar's sources... whatever they may be.

Dhimmicrat is too obscure. It requires education to understand it, therefore it is not wise for Reps to use it. They'd better stick to "Jackasses".

I can't think of anything more derogatory than "Democrat."

If you want people to stop using oil -- gasoline to be exact -- you would want a $100/barrel oil. Of course that wouldn't last because demand will drop and at those prices there's better oil than the crap they have in Venezuela.

Bush didnt fail the company failed, big difference. Bush made out like a bandit.
Bandit is exactly right.
In January with the company in the same state as its previous incarnations, it was awarded a contract to drill for crude oil off the coast of Bahrain, a move that shocked industry insiders as Harken had no previous experience outside of the US or of drilling offshore.
In June Bush sold most shares in Harken to a Los Angeles broker named Ralph D. Smith. One week later Harken announced an overall loss of $23.2 million triggering an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission into the sale.
The company was failing and one of Daddy's rich friends took it off his hands and swallowed the loss (and kept Dubya from being investigated by the SEC). In other words, his company failed and he was bailed out.
