Recently I decided to upgrade my FC3 to FC4. This is the first OS upgrade that I have performed that didn't impress me. (I dodged the Windows ME bullet)

The first time I logged in, it informed me that the e-mail notification tool no longer works with the new desktop. This is minor, I can live without or find an alternative. I then noticed that they re-designed the menus a little. I checked them out an saw that some of the applications I had previously were no longer listed. That's a little annoying, but I'm no stranger to the command prompt, I'll survive. Looks like it installed OpenOffice 1.9. Too bad I had already installed 2.0 before and 1.9 took over my shortcuts. sigh. Now the screensaver I was using displays an error. OPen the screensaver preferences and my screensaver isn't listed. Only one screensaver is listed and that one doesn't seem to work right. I tried to print to the printer on my Windows box. Nothing. Send test printing. Get an error. After some work I discover that Samba is having problems.

Am I missing something? So far, the only real difference that I see is that they took away some functionality. Was I wrong to upgrade? Is there anything about FC4 that is better than FC3? Right now I'm thinking about trying to go back. Should have made a backup.:(

I'm still using a much updated and tweaked installation of FC3. I didn't think I had the energy to install FC4 before today, and your post has comforted me in that attitude!

What sort of upgrade did you do? From your description it dosn't look like you did a clean install. I have heard of problems going from 3 -> 4. Usually what I do is sync everything off of the box. Then do a clean install. Then sync my personal stuff back. That seems to work the best. I don't think that you should be getting those errors. It sounds to me of problems from doing an upgrade rather then a rebuild. There were a few changes between the two versions.

I just booted up with the CD and chose the upgrade option. Silly me for thinking that would work :D

I should have known it wouldn't be smooth, of the first four CDs I burned, only one was good. Some days, it just doesn't pay to sit at the keyboard.
