Anyone Ever see This Problem?

I'm trying to do a clean install of Windows 7. I select the language on one screen, select the time on the next screen, then the screen comes up where I can check the box to accept the license terms.

Except I can't check the box! I can move the cursor around, but clicking on the box does nothing. :boggled:

Any ideas?

if theres a scroll bar, scroll all the way to the bottom, some of CAs products do that, just a thought

Bill Gates knows you and he is pissed? ;)

I've never seen that. I have seen what mikeyx refers to as the need to (eh hem) 'read' a EULA which is usually accomplished by scrolling to the bottom to signify 'reading' wherein the accept button is enabled.

Is this an upgrade or a full version of Windows 7?

Full version, 64-bit Home Premium.

OEM version?

I cannot find any related issues through Google. Where did you purchase the OS software?

ETA, have you done a compatibility check with the MS software for this purpose? It may be that some hardware isn't compatible and is hanging the process (?).

Try the 'Tab' key, to see if you can get the check box selected, then hit the spacebar to check it.

Also, try PageDown to get to the end of the EULA. If the PageDown button does nothing, click in the text of the EULA to select it, or Tab to select the EULA text, then PageDown.

Full version, not OEM. It was the "digital download" W7, but I have it on a DVD since I didn't want to d/l a 3 GB file. As far as hardware goes it's an Asus P5QL-E mobo, Core 2 Duo E8500, 4 GB ram. 2 SATA 1 TB hard drives in a RAID 1.

Now, the first time I tried to load it it recognized the hard drive but said it couldn't load Windows on it. I thought maybe I should load a RAID driver, so I shut it down and downloaded the driver (from another computer) from the Intel site. While trying again was when I couldn't click the box. But I was able to the first time!

The Intel Matrix Storage Manager shows the array is functioning normally.

Nope, none of that works.

Hmm, check W7 hardware compatibility?

So, it couldn't see your HD? And it decided the best way to let you know was to not allow you to agree to the EULA?

Press the tab key and repeat until the checkbox is selected, then press space to check the box.
Ah, progress! Yes, I can check the box with the space bar. I was hitting "enter" before to no avail.

Now I can get to the next screen, but I have a message that "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1". When I highlight "show details" with the keyboard (the mouse apparently won't function from the EULA onward, and if I click the mouse I can't use the keyboard either) I get the message "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

So I figure it's a driver issue and insert the flash drive containing the driver I downloaded from Intel. Windows finds the driver and loads it, but the message that I can't install Windows on that partition persists. So I scroll over and have windows format the drive, but still get the message.

eta: maybe it wasn't formatted after all. I get the message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. see the setup log files for more information".

I have no idea how to see the setup log files.

I found this page which says W7 has a problem with dynamic disks. Would disconnecting the SATA cable from one of my disks in the RAID 1 array help? If so, and W7 installed successfully, could I reconnect the disk to get my array back, or would I have to get a new disk and rebuild the array? The latter isn't a bad option actually, since my backup disk is a 250 GB IDE and is rapidly running out of space and I could just use the 1 TB SATA disk that was in my RAID array as a backup.

w00t!

I disconnected my usb scanner and printer, and all of a sudden Windows has no problem with my RAID disks and it is installing as I write this!

Everything appears to be working fine, installing upates now. Now I can spend the rest of the weekend installing software. :p

Thanks for the help, especially commandlinegamer for the space bar thing I had forgotten long ago.

USB peripherals were throwing the installer off?? OMG... how in the world could that have happened??

Yes, that was a rhetorical question; I'm expressing amazement, not looking for an answer. Why Win7's installer would freak due to peripherals being attached is beyond me; even if it suspected those unidentified (at that point in the install) items were disks somehow, it still should've realized that the partitions it was seeing were still valid volumes to install into. That behavior is a straight out mystery.

You happen to see the BIOS identify itself during bootup? I work in support, and in case a similar issue ever crosses my analysts desks, I'd like to have that info in my pocket.

Yes, the BIOS was set to RAID and the RAID array showed up properly in the boot order. The RAID manager said it was healthy and bootable.

I knew a usb flash drive could screw things up, disconnecting the scanner and printer was a last-ditch desperation move I didn't think had a chance of succeeding.

Anyway, this is my first post here with W7.

I suspect that your printer has a built-in memory card reader? If so, the windows installer may have been trying to enumerate volumes on that and failing, since there was likely no card inserted. Check to see if you have "Boot from USB" enabled somewhere in your BIOS. At this point, It's all academic, but I'd like to find out if that is the reason for it.
