"Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.
"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said."

Er, so what if Lehman did not approve of the Silver Star?

Kerry got the Silver Star in 1969 while Lehman did not become Secretary of the Navy until 1981.

But the citation language over Lehman's signature was considerably different than the original... and quite a bit more flattering to Kerry, as opposed to the original's more boilerplate language. There's also another issue with the Navy paperwork - his Silver Star is stated to have the V enhancement for combat on his DD 214 paperwork... but the Silver Star cannot be enhamced with the combat V. Either the Navy documentation is erroneous, or fraudulent. The Kerry campaign has been notified of this error, but as yet hasn't investigated or taken down the document in question.

Before this argument goes too much further, I believe it is possible to get a Silver Star with a V if one serves in the Army, but not (apparently) in the Navy.

It is weird that a "V" was added in the 1980s (along with different language) but not likely to be some nefarious plot of Kerry's to advance his Senate Career.

In a new suntimes articles they quote a guy who has found tons of errors in these medal citiations. He noted that the V could just be another paperwork error.

medal

yes, I agree, I would buy the idea of a mistake in paperwork, etc., before I would buy someone doctoring medals. To me you would have to be a total idiot to do something like that.

I am tired of hearing about this whole mess anyway.

I hope that they get back to the real issues soon, because to be honest, I really am not that concerned about how many medals anyone has, but who can most succesfully lead the country.

The swift boat guys have got there punches in, and should feel that they have gotten Kerry back now for however he insulted them, and so maybe this is go away. And the things that are important can be concentrated on.

While this story may have been intriguing for a while, it has been over done. Let's drop it.
