Joe Arpaio, who calls himself "America's Toughest Sheriff," is under investigation in addition to the regular lawsuits the county receives.

A federal grand jury is investigating Joe Arpaio, the Arizona sheriff known for his aggressive stance on illegal immigration, for possible abuses of power in launching investigations of local officials who disagree with him, authorities said Friday.

Two Maricopa County officials have been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury to testify about Arpaio's actions against county officials since they moved to cut his budget in late 2008.

Since then Arpaio and County Atty. Andrew Thomas, an ally, have filed criminal charges against two county supervisors, have said dozens of other county workers are under investigation and have filed a federal racketeering lawsuit accusing the entire county political structure of conspiring against them.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio was grilled by attorneys during a 7-hour deposition in a racial profiling lawsuit, filed against Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. During questioning, the sheriff made some surprising revelations.

At one point, the sheriff admitted he hasn't even read his own book all the way through. He was asked about passages in that book, and about past statements he made in public.

The sheriff and his policies were put under the microscope during the long deposition. He's named as a defendant in a federal civil rights lawsuit. The suit claims sheriff's deputies racially profile during traffic stops.

An off-to-the-side question - did they ever handle that case of the deputy in a court room reading and taking materials from the defense desk during a trial a couple of months ago? Arpaio was sloughing that off as well.

Arpaio Will Cooperate With Investigators
Grand Jury Investigating Allegations Of Abuse Of Power By Sheriff Joe Arpaio, MCSO
POSTED: 8:59 am MST January 19, 2010
KPHO Phoenix

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will cooperate with investigators looking into allegations of abuse of power by the sheriff and his office, Arpaio said Saturday.

"I look forward to giving (investigators) everything that we have," Arpaio said. "Everything on all of the investigations, (and) then I'm going to shut this off."

The grand jury, which met for the first time Wednesday, has already heard testimony from County Manager David Smith, Deputy County Manager Sandi Wilson and MCSO Chief of Business Operations Loretta Barkall.

Both Smith and Wilson are under criminal investigation.

A 5 Investigates report in October discovered that dozens of people -- including politicians, county workers, judges and business owners -- complained the sheriff targeted them with investigations after they criticized him.

I hope the American justice system is every bit as harsh on him as he advocates when applying the law to others.

This is the guy who claims that if you can feed a dog on a dollar a day, an inmate can be fed for fifty cents?

Seen him on the telly.

How about we see him under a sentence. Or in a jail cell of the sort he loves so much. Or under an inmate in a shower scene.

The language I'd use to describe Arpaio would get me a nice stiff yellow card.

He's the subject of a m***********g Amnesty International investigation and report! AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL!

Because advocating rape as a judicial punishment is just so COOL.

Heck I would equip the showers with romantic lighting, sprinkle rose pettles everywhere and make it to where a speaker played "Endless Love" everytime we sent him to the showers.

I am not advocating anything. I just figured it would be some relaxation time. Some aroma therapy, combined with smooth music.

He is the one who put the inmates in pink underpants.

I'm not sure if that's better than yellow stars.

Or, y'know, totally subject an inmate to brutal and inhumane treatment to the point that he died, but something like that.

I've been saying for years that Nickelbag Joe is literally (and criminally) insane and will ultimately die behind bars or in a mental institution. Just another inch closer to proving me right . . .

Bold mine.

What the hell? Seriously?

To be honest this whole thing is like the movie Nothing But Trouble come to life. I mean when the Sheriff and Attorney try to prosecute the entire County government because they try to check the law enforcement authority we have trouble.
