All praise Cardinal Dolan

I'm tired of all the unjustified deference and excessive praise heaped upon New York's biggest religious bigot, I mean, newly appointed Cardinal, Timothy Dolan, in the New York City media. This has been bothering me for a while, but then the front page of today's NY Daily News expressed "outrage" that the Empire State Building did not glow red to honor Dolan's recent promotion to Cardinal(the "Freedom Tower" at the World Trade Center however did "honor" him). The local TV news continues to act like Dolan's elevation to Cardinal is a super important news story for all New Yorkers.

The same exact thing happened when the Empire State Building's owner(who I believe is non-Catholic) refused to honor the religious fanatic Mother Teresa on her 100th birthday - the NY Daily News even gave a "Knucklehead" Award to the buildings owner a few years back and Bill Donohue threw his usual hissy fit. Earth to the Catholic Church - You don't own the Empire State Building!

If the NY Daily News(I don't buy the paper) was owned by a Catholic, it would be easier to understand this "outrage". Yet, it is owned by a Jewish real estate tycoon, so what gives? I suppose it's because there's a large Catholic population in the NY Metropolitan area. But then again, so many Catholics strongly disagree with Dolan on a number of important issues, so again, what gives?

The article even quotes Bill Donohue, the Head of the right-wing Catholic League:
"“It’s an insult to Catholics and to the vast majority of New Yorkers who love Cardinal Dolan,” said Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League."

What presumptuousness! How does he know this? This isn't surprising, coming from a lunatic like Bill Donohue.

It also quotes the head of the Port Authority, which did honor Dolan:
“Cardinal Dolan has captured the hearts of all New Yorkers with his quick wit, street smarts and compassion for those of all religious faiths,” said PA Executive Director Pat Foye.

Well I am a New Yorker, and he sure hasn't captured my heart, or the heart of anyone I know. This idea that somehow all New Yorkers "love" Dolan or should at least respect him or see him as a "representative" of New York is dangerous nonsense. He doesn't even represent the interests of most Catholics. New York City is one of the most socially liberal cities in the U.S, and the Catholic Church is strongly opposed to all of this.

Dolan is a bigot of the worst kind. He opposes gay equality, he opposes birth control, and he opposes a woman's right to choose. He is a representative of a pedophilia-enabling organization. Dolan has accomplished absolutely nothing deserving of such praise from Catholics and non-Catholics, unless crusading against women's reproductive health and gay rights is considered a respectable pursuit these days.

Sexist, anti-gay bigot Dolan continues to fight a war that was lost decades ago. Most American Catholic women use birth control, and some even have abortions.

What can secularists and non-Catholics due to counter the unjustified deference Dolan continues to get? He gets way too much free publicity, and it is usually good publicity. I wish the media would ignore him or at least be more critical and honest about him and the Catholic Church's declining influence. I don't think we should ever overlook a person's bigotry or stupidity just because they are a religious figure with a supposedly good sense of humor.

We should hear more voices congratulating Anthony Malkin(the Empire State Buildings owner) for standing his ground, for not giving in to religious bullies.

I don't know about all this but I do know that Bill Donohue is a blustering penis.

The Empire State Building (ESB) celebrates many cultures and causes in the world community with iconic lightings. Its tower lights recognize key milestones, events, charitable organizations, countries and holidays throughout the world, not political or religion-related events. Outside of its tradition of lightings for the religious holidays of Easter, Eid al-Fitr, Hanukah and Christmas, ESB has a specific policy against lighting for religious figures, religious organizations, and additional religious holidays.

Their guidelines seem well laid out. If I had a criticism it would be that they promote so much that it does not have much real meaning.

Sounds to me like it could be a regional pissing match between New York's and Boston's Irish catholic communities.

To borrow a phrase from Charlie Booker, what a "Giant thundering backside".

Either the Cardinal or Donohue.

I think he has ambitions to be the first American pope.

That's sorta funny, when you think about it.

I'm not sure why no one else seems to realize what the real issue is concerning Rush Limbaugh's sexism and the fallout in reaction to it. It's puzzling. The problem with Rush Limbaugh isn't that he's a vile sexist. His real problem is that he is incredibly stupid and wears the wrong clothing. Doesn't he know by now that if you want to express extremely sexist views with impunity and get "respect" in spite of this, you have to become a Catholic bishop and wear this funny hat? Or if you can't get one of those, try this. Heck, even while fighting a crusade against women's rights, you can still pretend everyone "loves" you, even getting some non-Catholics to buy into this delusion.

It's too bad(for his sake), that Limbaugh doesn't realize this. Then he would most likely not have to apologize for essentially expressing what Catholic bishops believe about women who use birth control.

I haven't paid much attention to the cardinals in New York since the 60's, when Cardinal Spellman was rampant. I am a very nice, forgiving, laid back guy and wish harm to nearly nobody, but when I heard on the car radio that he had died, it was one of the few times such news has caused me to cheer out loud.

My problem is this: If they are expecting the Empire State Building's owner to make his building glow red in Dolan's honor, they are, by logical extension expecting all New Yorkers to celebrate Dolan's promotion. They are expecting all New Yorkers of all faiths and even the faithless to respect and/or acknowledge Dolan's "authority".

For anyone out there who is expecting me to respect Dolan: I do not respect Timothy Dolan. I see his recent promotion as meaningless. I do not take him or his views seriously. He is a joke who wears silly costumes, and is a bigot and a sexist and may even be an enabler of pedophile priests. I stand strongly opposed to him when it comes to his anti-gay, anti-woman crusade. I am an atheist who used to be Christian. I do not hate the man, that is too strong of a word. I do not fear the man either, since the Inquisition is luckily a thing of the past.

Dolan's problem though isn't people like me. His real problem is that relatively few Catholics take him(or other Catholic bishops) seriously, and this number is growing, especially among the young. How can we call a man a "leader" when so few people follow him?

If his own "flock" doesn't take him seriously, why the heck should non-Catholics take him seriously?
