Well, not really.

But it has been brought up by alien abductees time and again.

I can't count on two hands the number of times that my body was totally paralized, and someone was standing next to me.

I have experienced many times being in a state between sleep and awake. I couldn't move my body. At the same time, I felt the presence of some evil being, standing next to me. There was nothing I could do, except closing my eyes, groan and tossing my head back and forth  in the hope that evil being would leave. All those experiences where, at that moment, very scary.

But do I believe, because of that, my @ss has been probed by greys? Heck, no. Allthough I'm no student of human psyche(sp), I believe it is just a natural state of the body, nothing alien about it.

Why the heck I started this topic? Dunno, but it seems to fit in with the fantasy world of the denier nutters.

Actually, aliens seem to probe my anus on a regular basis. Even worse, the last thing they always do before they leave is dip my thumb in this foul-smelling junk that leaves a brown stain.

Damn aliens!

What do they call those? Hypnopompic dreams or something like that?

I've had a lot of experiences with nightmares that had me desperately struggling to wake up- sometimes through multiple layers of nightmare- with the sensation of being helplessly wrapped up in something and the certainty that there was something awful standing beside me.

I suppose that my taste in literature is reflected in the fact that the evil unseen something is right out of Dracula rather than an alien. If I were a reader of UFO books perhaps the scenario would be different.

At any rate, I always struggle back to consciousness to find that both my neck and my @$$ are perfectly OK.

There are indeed some terms to describe this state of one's body. But heck if I know what they are called. As long as I know it's nothing alien or whatnot, I've got nothing to loose.

Anyway, ktesibios, I just asume my @ss is OK, you actualy go and find out? ;)

Items that are still there and not in pain are assumed to be OK, wiseguy.:p

It is referred to as the hypnagogic state. Commonly referred to as "Night Terrors" or "sleep paralysis", though there are some subtle difference between each.

Night Terrors kind of sounds like Freddy's to me.
But I'm sure you'r right about the terms. Thanks.

I'm a regular "sufferer" of sleep paralysis myself, having many episodes yearly(sometime multiple episodes on a given night). When I first started having them, they were terrifying(though I've never given a second thought to LGMs ) and that feeling of a presence can feel so real and scary. But lately, I've come to find the experience quite pleasurable and the SP hypnagogic hallucinations can actually trigger lucid dreaming. I've even had a few out-of-body experience type hallicinations that didnt feel anything remotely like a dream, as I was fully conscious.

A few tips if you want to avoid or control these episodes. Dont sleep in the supine position(face up), or on your side. Get plenty of sleep, try to stay on a regular sleep schedule(impossible for me because of my work schedule), and dont force yourself to stay awake for more than 24 consecutive hours.

If you have an SP episode, dont fight it, dont try to sit up, dont try to scream out, dont try to move your head. Concentrate on wiggling fingers/toes and try to blink your eyes. Or you can just "ride" the episode and let it finish - this is my approach and the associated tingling is quite nice IMO :D

I to have suffered from them occasionally, and you are right, I find they occur almost exclusively when I am on my back. I have found that I do exactly as you have said not to, I try to move, and scream, and eventually I do wake up, but man it feels like you are drowning.

The most important difference between night terrors and sleep paralysis is that patients cannot recall having the former, whereas they are fully conscious during the latter. Other differences include the stage of sleep each occurs in, and the underlying reason for each.

Joshua;

My memories of my neuroscience studies are faded at the moment. What phase of sleep does each occur in? I think the terrors are stage 4, where as the paralysis, being almost between sleep and wakefulness is likely stage 1, but I could be wrong?

You are correct. Incidentally, "nightmares" are responsible for neither malady, as dreams occur in yet another sleep stage, that of REM.

For me, my SPs usually occur just as I'm drifting off, though I have had a few occur as I was coming out of deep sleep. I've also had them during the day when I was able to open my eyes and see my surroundings(though that couldve been a hypnagogic hallucination.)
I must've had 100 of these episodes or more, but I still couldnt say definitively whether they occur when I'm awake or asleep. I imagine they happen somewhere in between.

I heard about sleep paralysis on CBC's Quirks and Quarks (where they reported that in Newfoundland it's referred to as an "Old Hag" experience.) Now that I know what they are, I find them less terifying, but only once I get enough neurons firing that I understand what's going on. That's usually quickly after the onset of the experience.

Wikipedia has an interesting article on sleep paralysis.

You might ask Iamme - he(?)'s been asking about the solar system and relations between (among?) the planets.

Sleep paralysis is actually kind of fascinating. Not to the person undergoing it, of course, but from an outside perspective. The brain naturally freezes the body's motor functions during sleep, so that we don't act out our dreams like somebody using a "VR machine" in a dorky old sci-fi movie. As your body wakes up, there's a point at which this paralysis is supposed to turn off, of course. If it turns off too late (or conversely turns on too soon before you actually go to sleep), you're "awake" before you're unparalyzed, which (as you can read above) ain't fun. On the other hand, if the paralysis turns off too soon, you've got a neat situation called somnambulation, which you won't be aware of while it's happening, but will nonetheless provide hours of delightful entertainment for the people you live with.
