Sounds like he knew all along that defeat was unavoidable. But by refusing to comply with discovery, he doesn't have to disclose his organization's inner workings, which might open him up to more lawsuits from other people he's maligned. Paradoxically this is a lesser defeat than a more straightforward loss would have cost him.
 
I suspect he was vulnerable to FDA and state regulator enforcement action for some of the supplement selling he was doing. He might have wanted to keep that out of the public eye.

He very well may be, but I wager that falls outside the scope of discovery for an action for defamation.
 
OK I couldn't find the main thread but Jones' appeal has been rejected by the USSC.
