CAIRO, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Doha-based al-Jazeera satellite television Wednesday broadcast a tape by al-Qaida's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri who called for a holy war to liberate Palestine. In the video tape, the al-Qaida number two said that only Jihad(holy war) can bring about the liberation of the occupied Palestinian territories and any other way will only lead to loss and defeat. "Those trying to liberate the land of Islam through elections based on secular constitutions ... will not liberate a grain of sand of Palestine," he added.

So the #2 at Al Qeida is calling for a unified Islamic theocracy? Maybe they do hate us for our freedoms.

And what? Dr. alZawahiri can speak for himself.

The report represents a new development in the Palestine conflict:

Al-Qa'eda's jihadist rhetoric often includes calls for Israelis and foreigners to be driven from Palestine as part of the restoration of the medieval Caliphate.

But its rhetoric rarely converges so closely with the aims of a particular Palestinian group, in this case Hamas, which has repeatedly rejected the plan for an early poll.

The call papers over traditional differences of opinion between al-Qa'eda and Hamas. While both groups have militant Islamist roots, there has been much mutual hostility and suspicion which stopped al-Qa'eda becoming a meaningful force in the West Bank or Gaza.

A spokesman for Hamas gave a guarded welcome to the calls from al-Qa'eda for Palestinian land to be liberated. But he said that Hamas preferred to use its own methods, which did not involve jihad.

Steve,
The point we're making (before this turns into Danish Tag Team Wrestling) is that there is nothing newsworthy about the number two guy in the most noted terrorist organizaiton on earth advocating violence as the only solution in Palestine.
This is like "Dog Bites Man".

Where?
And? is not a question insofar as I am concerned. I asked "And what?" to which you did not respond.
Sorry. I was unaware of your inability to understand simple questions. Let me expand a bit, then: Of what relevance is it that this Al-Zawahri blathered the blather that he blathered?
See quoted news item.
You said the quote represented a new development. So...where is it?

I wish I could be as succinct as you are.

So ...where is it?

I wish you would at some point answer the simple question I asked.

Let me reiterate, in case you missed it: "You said the quote represented a new development. So...where is it?"

Steve, Where is the NEW in this? That's all we're asking.
This ain't real surprising. Do you find something astonishing (or even thread-worthy) that the leopard hasn't changed his spots?

Al Zawahiri also said al Qaeda is the real power in Iraq:
In his comments on Iraq, al-Zawahri appeared to suggest that Washington should be negotiating with al-Qaida over the fate of the country. The Bush administration has been reaching out to numerous players in Iraq and to allied Mideast governments in an attempt to calm escalating violence amid calls in the U.S. for a troop reduction.

"I want to tell the Republicans and the Democrats together ... you are trying to negotiate with some parties to secure your withdrawal, but these parties won't find you an exit" from Iraq, al-Zawahri said.

"It seems that you will go through a painful journey of failed negotiations until you will be forced to return to negotiate with the real powers," he said, referring to al-Qaida's branch in the country, which has allied with some Sunni Arab insurgent groups.
Well, for the last five years, we've been hearing from the left that we shouldn't be concerned about Iraq, that we should be concentrating on getting Osama and destroying al Qaeda. Since al Qaeda is the real power in Iraq, should Congress declare war on Iraq? I don't recall al Qaeda claiming to be running any other country.

(Having pulled pin from grenade and casually tossing it into the midst of thread, BPSCG steps back...)

Of course al Qaeda only claimed to have gained control of Iraq after US military intervention. So what leads you to believe that congress declaring war on Iraq would diminish (rather than bolster) al Qaeda's influence?
:P

Does Congress believe we should fight al Qaeda wherever they are? Or is it only in Afghanistan and the streets of New York City?

If al Qaeda truly is "the real power" in Iraq, why shouldn't the U.S. be fighting Iraq the same way we fought Germany when the Nazis were the real power there?

I don't speak from congress, nor do i exepct them to have a common opinion on such a complex matter.

Only the most delusional of fools believes that al Qaeda is the "real power" in Iraq in the same way that the Nazis where the "real power" in Germany.
Al Qaeda is an armed faction, not a government; the two situations could not be more dissimilar.

They'd be more dissimilar if all of Al Qaeda were lesbian rocket scientists. :p

If that were the case, the armed forces would have little trouble meeting their recruitment goals for young men to pursue lesbian rocket scientists!
