Sylvia Browne's new book was released yesterday. I was surprised that I couldn't find an existing thread for it, so I created one. Please free to close this down if there is an active thread on the topic that I simply missed.

Here is the press release...

San Francisco, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) February 03, 2011

Sylvia Browne, world renowned psychic and New York Times bestselling author, has done it again with a book only she could write. "Afterlives of the Rich and Famous" (HarperOne; February 2011; $25.99) is a fascinating tour of the next life passions, pursuits, and preoccupations of scores of the most famous celebrities of all time.

This fascinating look into the lives and afterlives of some of our most cherished stars incorporates what these deceased icons want to share with their loved ones and fans. By entering a deep trance state and channeling her longtime spirit guide, Francine, Sylvia was able to tap into the lives of celebrities on the Other Side. Her loyal readers and fans will be delighted to discover Francine’s role in this new book, and to discover the goings on of their favorite actors, musicians, and noted experts.

Among the celebrity revelations in "Afterlives":

Paul Newman’s feelings about his acting career, his looks, his philanthropy, the celebrity friends he associates with now, and his feelings for his son on the Other Side, as well as his wife and co-star, Joanne Woodward.

Marilyn Monroe and the mental disorder she suffered from; how her life and ‘death’ shaped her status as an icon; and how she views fame from the Other Side.

How Heath Ledger is doing today; the work he’s specializing in on the Other Side; which Hollywood actor he’s training with there; and the message he has for Michelle and his family.

Anna Nicole Smith was only on her second incarnation, which explains why she was so naïve throughout her life and had such a difficult time understanding whom to trust. Learn about her reunion with her son, Daniel; her feelings about the paternity case regarding Dannielynn; her reunion with J. Howard Marshall, for whom she cared deeply; and her understanding of fame now.

How did John Kennedy, Jr. arrive on the Other Side? Discover who John’s surprising soulmate is; how much privacy he has now; and how his father feels about John’s decision not to choose a career in politics.

Mattie Stepanek stayed on earth just long enough to reignite the spark of faith in an incalculable number of people. Learn how this rare, highly advanced spirit is connected with his mother these days, and how Mattie feels about her and his short yet powerful life here.

Would Grace Kelly have planned to continue her film career? How did she feel about her role as Princess Grace? Does she live a private or public life on the Other Side? Is she in contact with Prince Rainier?

"Afterlives of the Rich and Famous" explores the otherworldly lives of forty beloved celebrities we’ve loved and provides an intimate glimpse of cherished lives we only thought we’d lost. Sylvia Browne provides an enlightening depiction of what happens to our spirits when our bodies stop living, from the legendary tunnel to a description of the Other Side itself and what our lives are like there to a few alternative destinations we might happen to choose—the Left Door, the Holding Place and the world of Ghosts/Earthbounds—and the type of role we take on in the afterlife, each represented by the celebrities in the book.

A riveting tour of the interests, private thoughts, intentions on future incarnation, and legacies of these celebrities, "Afterlives" is a revelation from beyond.

Here's another sample from the book, and honestly the one that prompted me to create the thread...

Michael Jackson gave a "thrilling series of 16 concerts" on the great stage in the sky and continues to entertain, "giving dancing instructions and living among countless animals."

Jackson must be very forgiving if he allowed Sylvia Browne to watch his concerts. Afterall, she did predict that he would be found guilty in the child molestation case brought against him.

I also love how Michael doesn't even bother try and send a message to the world of the living regarding Dr. Conrad Murray. This would have been the perfect opportunity. I wouldn't think people that can "communicate" with the dead come see concerts in the afterlife all that often. Why wouldn't he take five seconds out of his, ahem, afterlife to let Browne know if his Dr. was innocent or guilty?

Once again another giant joke from the mouth of Sylvia Browne, but unfortunately also more than likely a bestseller.

Is she doing this because she can't be sued for saying what dead people are saying?

She's doing it because she has a legion of fans that believe she really can speak with the dead, and will buy any product she peddles.

No idea on the legalities of making up thoughts and comments purported to be from dead people, but if I had to wager a guess I'd say she is unlikely to be sued by Michael Jackson anytime soon. Although that would be awesome. A lawyer claiming to represent the spirit of Michael Jackson suing Sylvia Browne for libel or slander.

Inspired by Almo and GregInAustin, I decided to write my own Amazon review. Since I don't believe it will last long there, I am copying it over here.

"I happen to be in constant communication with several deceased celebrities myself, and I can tell you they are not happy at all with this book.

First of all, Michael Jackson has told me that he would never allow Sylvia Browne to watch one of his concerts in The Great Cloud. (That's what those on the underside refer to Heaven as). This is due to a longstanding feud he has with Sylvia regarding her prediction that he would be found guilty of his child molestation charges. As you all are aware, he was acquitted of all charges brought against him. Michael believes that Elvis may have let it slip to Sylvia that he was throwing a concert for the dead, but in no way, shape or form was she allowed inside to watch.

Heath Ledger is also very upset with Browne. When Sylvia arrived on the other side and spoke with Heath, she had promised to bring back to the world of the living his Acceptance Speech for his Best Actor Oscar nomination. Although he does feel that Sylvia herself has been overlooked in this category, and is also justly deserving of the award. Instead Sylvia opted to discuss his acting lessons with another famous dead celebrity. Lessons Heath said were private and not for mortal public consumption.

All in all a very inaccurate book."

Wow, this book sinks even lower than I thought possible. This has to be one of the dumbest ideas for a book, but as was already mentioned, there will be legions of fans who will buy any garbage Sylvia writes. This is the kind of trash I imagine Oprah would love to promote, it mixes Celebrity tripe with the Supernatural, two for the price of one. I guess she truly wants to be known as "The Psychic To The Stars"! Ugh, it's bad enough she promotes 'Afterlife' crap, but now she mixes it in the best of Hollywood traditions.

It's like taking Celebrity Gossip (which is bad enough) and mixing with Psychic crap!!!

Ugh again...

And if I didn't make myself clear enough - UGH for the third time...

I think I'll try to find the book to see what she writes about Marilyn Monroe and compare it to what she said in Visits From the Afterlife.

If it contradicts, or if any of the others do, I'll post about it.

There are no words.

There is, however, my face when.

Another thread on this topic:

I'm sorry, I didn't intend to make a duplicate thread. If a mod would like to merge the two by all means please do!

Not to steer this thread off-topic at all, but a point was brought up by Almo that I am curious to find out the answer to. How and why is a book like this ok?

I was thinking of creating a site that goofs on the whole psychic and afterlives thing, but I don't really know what legal protections deceased celebrities have.

Speaking of slight derails, I went to check out the reviews on amazon and I notice that Chris Dufresne has another book set to be released soon too: Ghosts: The Truth and Mysteries of Paranormal Spirits.

:hb:

There's nothing new under the Sun, however. Years ago, perhaps the mid-70s, my wife got a series of books from some psychic or other... It may have been the self-styled "witch", Sybil Leek. One of those types, at any rate and it was very much in the vein of what Browne is putting down.
The afterlives of famous people.
She even had Hitler covered... Poor fellow was still suffering from guilt...

Wonder if he's got his act together in the intervening 40 years?

You know, I can see how people can buy into some woo peddlers, but I can't see how people buy in Slyvia. She is a very inept and obvious practioner of the art.

That would be awesom to see a lawyer in court talking to an empty chair..lol She couldnt say anything about it..if she can talk to dead people why cant attorny's?

I feel amazed a person can legally do this, and wonder about the estates and families and if they have any say in this sort of thing. And I feel stupid for not doing it myself. There's this part of my inner mind that for some reason seems to discourage such a thing, something,.. oh yeah, that's shame.

She has NO shame. Please please somebody stop her!!!

The thing that makes me laugh is all her fans (55,000+ of them on facebook!??) are always sprinkling their 'love and light' crap about the place.. until an evil dark force (skeptic) turns up on one of their worship Sylvia forums, then they start BASHING them and Putting them down HARD. Hmmm. Why so defensive I wonder??

I noticed it , for example, on the Sylvia Browne facebook fan page, under a discussion topic, titled 'Sylvia browne fake and liar'. (check it out) Lol. Oh dear, that kind of 'negativity' is really going to piss them off. They then start the usual distraction techniques, claiming victimisation, and all the usual excuses as to why Sylvia hasn't done the Randi challenge. (Randi's this, that and the other, and its a scam, a fix, the money doesnt exist, yada, yada).
