"See you in Hell, Johnny Yank!"
"See you in Hell, Billy Reb!"

Quote from the book and miniseries "Gettysburg". The assumption is that they're wishing each other to be sent to "that other place". My studies suggest that it means they'll both be consigned to the same place after they die. Civil Wars are so very uncivil and yet they know these people, they could move in next door to them with little or no comment.

I thought about this when I had sent some time with the "Bowery Boys", a division that was largely "Northerners" (as if it mattered at all in the 1970s USN.) Most of my guys had never considered that American fought American in those days, until it was explained to them. The most divisive war in US history destroyed a separative mindset forever. (At least on the scale it had been before the war.)

So maybe we can use T.rump for something similar now? It was presumed impossible to surmount what was a very artificial presumption of "insurmountable differences" requiring separation for survival of the idea of "separate nations with common backgrounds." Will it win out this time or can we grow up a little?
