A group that opposes same-sex marriage has called for a boycott of McDonald's, saying the fast-food giant has refused "to stay neutral in the cultural war over homosexuality."

The American Family Association (AFA) launched the boycott yesterday because McDonald's joined the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce several months ago and placed an executive on the group's board of directors, in addition to donating to the chamber.

Linky.

Here are all the corporate sponsors.

My conclusion is that they are attention whores getting media publicity, which seems to be working as I've seen this story on CNN three times now.

I await their boycott of WALL-E.

I'm sure it will every bit as successful as the Southern Baptist boycott of Disney World.

How's that Disney World doing? Still there, eh? What a surprise.

I don’t see why a fortune 500 corporation needs to take a stand on any social issue by giving money to advocacy groups. Doing so has not helped Ford at all. They should give to charity to help people instead of wasting money on sponsoring gay pride events.

If management really wants to do something smart, it would say the heck with being socially responsible and focus on generating profits

Translation: "the fast-food giant has refused to "stay neutral or support our stance in the debate on homosexuals' rights".

Calling it a "social issue" minimizes the fact that LGBTs are working at McDonald's all the way to the upper management. Making sure they can work there effectively is a company issue. This particular organization provides info and training to that end.

Such decisions also produce entertaining reactions like AFA's.

I haven't eaten at McDonald's for years, but I will make it a point to drop in and buy a Big Extra this weekend.

(My darling dog will, no doubt, be so grateful for the AFA's bigotry that prompts me to patronize McD's that she will - right after wolfing down that Big Extra - acknowledge the AFA with a middle claw salute. Hey, she's a smart dog!)

As LashL notes, it almost makes me want to support McDonalds. But then, fortunately, sense returns.

I've been boycotting McDonalds for more than a decade, and it don't have nothing to do with LGBT issues. It is more of a "crappy food" issue.

I don't understand people who boycott McDonald's, for the simple reason that for something to to be boycotted, it has to be something you'd otherwise use, and people who actually eat McDonald's' "food" strike me as downright bizarre.

Kids LOVE McDonalds. I don't know why. Part of it might be that grandparents love to take their grandkids there.

We are expecting our first in December. I am trying to figure out what I am going to need to do to keep him/her away from the arches. If they want a playground, I'll take them to Chik-Fil-A instead.

Their southern chicken sandwiches are awesome cuz they taste like Chic-Fil-A's and is a good alternative for the athiests who don't want to frequent the other place because of their policies regarding christianity (I don't care one way or the other, but sometimes I want one of those delicious sandwiches on a Sunday).

Is it lonely, up there on your pedestal?

I actually used to not go to Cracker Barrel for almost the opposite reason.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracker_Barrel#Discrimination_against_LGBT_employees

In 1991, Cracker Barrel instituted a policy requiring employees to display "normal heterosexual values which have been the foundation of families in our society." According to the text of Understanding and Managing Diversity, by Carol Harvey, 17 LGBT workers were fired because they admitted or were assumed to be gay after the first few months that the policy was created. The company refused to change their policy in the face of protest demonstrations by gay rights groups. However, after 10 years of efforts by the New York City Employees Retirement System, a major shareholder, in 2002 the company's stockholders, in a proxy vote of historic proportion, voted 58% to rescind the practice. While a formal shareholder vote was never taken, immediately after that, the board of directors added sexual orientation to the company's nondiscrimination policy.
I wrote a letter stating my reasons for not going. I wasn't a regular anyway, so they probably didn't care.

ETA It seems odd to get upset because a business is not taking a stand on a politcal issue that doesn't really affect them. If this was McDonald's taking a stand on seasame seed imports, then it would be different.

You certainly won't see them joining the NGLCC any time soon.
