What are Adobe's plans for Flash Player and Adobe Reader?

Our long-term plan is to develop a "universal client" by combining PDF, Flash and HTML in a single, integrated runtime. Of course, we will continue delivering the Flash Player as a small, efficient runtime for content and applications on the web, and Adobe Reader for viewing and interacting with PDF documents and forms. The integration of these technologies into a unified framework creates a ubiquitous platform that runs on virtually every device, and dramatically expands the opportunities to create compelling solutions.

Oy vey. I hope the plan to trim down the pdf client before they start mixing it with the Flash client. Thank god I picked up that book on Ajax last week.

This was months ago, wasn't it? Or are you referring to their finally getting round to rebranding Macromedia products? I believe the word on the grapevine is that only Freehand is likely to die in the near future, and that's still not soon enough for my liking. Flash should be well invested in by Adobe, I would have thought.

Macromedia has been letting Authorware die a slow painful death long before the acquisition, but that's neither here nor there.

It's not the rebranding that concerns me as much as the merging. I'm sure they'll do a fine job. :boxedin:
 
Lack of competition can make companies do stupid things. Adobe loves DRM they could very well sink flash with it. I wouldnt put it past Adobe to start charging for a premium version of the flash player and cripple the free one.

Claus: Yes. Yes, it is. Been thinking that for a while, but the motivation hasn't been there. I may be re-thinking my situation once courseware starts breaking due to player changes.
