Adobe is going to stop rolling out flash for mobile browsers, and instead concentrate on HTML 5 and platforms for creating mobile apps via AIR.

Sounds like a good move to me. :)

Will be interesting to see how DRM will be addressed in the mobile space for video. Will mobile video go more towards apps to address DRM, or will it end up more like mp3s and start going un-DRM'ed ...

It's amazing Adobe could fail to see the sensory platform potential of their own product, like that. Do you know how long it's gonna take before webcams, mics, and sensory data transfer becomes a standard part of HTML?!

Oh sure, some other plug-ins will come along to fill the gaps, in the meantime. But, Adobe could have already dominated this field, if only they didn't have the stubborness to assume their product was primarily for animation, these days.

Much less than if we have to rely on having flash to implement the use these things, instead of including them in a more open/accessible standard ?

This is totally off-topic, but interesting. What is there to dominate ? Who is now dominating this field ? Is there a huge yearning for this, other than maybe pr0n ?

And now the Google hates our freedoms.

Chrome for Android won't support Flash, Adobe confirms
While Flash is still supported on Android's current default browser, Google plans to eventually replace that browser with Chrome, effectively signaling the end of mobile Flash Player.

RANT! So when apple does it, it's wrong, when google does it, it's awesome? Amiright ?

It's the difference of slamming the door in someone's face or closing the door after they leave. Are you suggesting that Google told Adobe to buzz off before they dropped mobile flash support?

Is it seriously necessary to bring the whole Mac VS PC crapfest into this thread, too?

Just updating this old thread with pertinent information. I apologize for not controlling myself with the editorial comments.

Interesting. I've never liked that browsers were beholden to Flash. It's ancient, clunky, and horrible to develop with. The only reason anyone ever used it was because its player was ubiquitous, and you could make very low-data things look nice. Its purpose is out of date.

It's not so bad to develop with. It's actually quite easy to use for developing certain kinds of animation and interactive games. The main drawback is when it's being used for things it wasn't originally intended for.

Over the past 5 years or so, Adobe tried to push Flash/FLEX as a general development platform for entire websites and RIAs (rich Internet applications), for which purpose it is really is horrible. But for making simple, graphically rich, yet low-bandwidth interactive games and animated movies for running in Web browsers, Flash is still pretty great.

And even desktop flash on linux is getting neutered

For Flash Player releases after 11.2, the Flash Player browser plugin for Linux will only be available via the “Pepper” API as part of the Google Chrome browser distribution and will no longer be available as a direct download from Adobe.

I have literally never gotten fullscreen flash on linux working with proper performance. It's usually such a chore to get working properly I just forgo it. Youtube et al work with HTML5, so screw it.

Why would it's purpose be out of date when it is used so much?

Its purpose was to produce animations on webpages that had very small memory signatures to reduce download times. As an example, you could get some simple vector animations into sizes under 10kB. This was back in the days of 56 kbps dial-up internet connections still being common. This isn't what it's used for any more, and there are better tools for the job, with the exception that only Flash has such a huge install base. This is the reason it survives, in my opinion.

I wrote a game in Flash. It's over at www.maniac-games.com if you're curious. It was such a huge pain to write that. I've written games on tons of platforms, and Flash is nowhere near the top of the list for ease of use. Its main advantage, which was the reason I put up with its orneriness, is that it is ubiquitous.

If I were to write another web game, I would not choose Flash because I liked it.
