Windows protection error - you need to restart your computer.

System halted

......every time I startup in non-safe mode

AAAAAGH! Window ME has come to get me!!!!

I'm seriously tempted to switch to Linux, but none of my games'll work

Run the sys boot under "step by step". If the puter works until it loads and only craps after "Loading all windows" drivers You prob have to install ME.
I don't know much about me but try to boot to commond line only. At command curser type scanreg. This will give you a list of the last sucessfull win loads. pick the newest one and restore. sometimes the operation will fail, try the other sucessfull reg entrys.Scan reg will also repair faulty reg copies.

If thet doesn't work, re-install the ME os. good luck.

Oh dear Lord! You must be one of the few people left in the world still struggling on with Windows ME. Chances are you can update to Windows 2K or XP on the same hardware and get miles more performance and reliability. Seriously, WinME is an accident and traffic-jam looking for somewhere to happen. Get out of that rut now!

And if the games you want are seriously not going to work on 2K or XP (and most will quite happily, it seems), make it a dual boot to Win98 or even straight DOS instead. Win98 has support for most usual games devices and is mostly reliable, but is a chunky lump just for gaming. Whereas DOS has far less overhead on disk and memory, but you need to make arrangements for the appropriate drivers for your devices.

Dunno about Linux and games!

Sorted. I re-installed ME into a different directory. Now I just have to re-install all my programs.

True story

True story brought on by your WinME woes (now happily solved:) ):

Lived with WinME for, say, half a year. Suffered through weekly reinstalls, became intimately known to the Blue Screen of Death, had a habit of restarting every hour or so to reclaim some of the memory that had disappeared into nothingness.

Finally, I had had enough. I partitioned my disk, installed WinME on one partition (still wanted my games, right) and Mandrake Linux on the other partition.

WinME didn't crash even once after that. I think Linus may have scared little Mr. Gates. :D

I agree ME is a nightmare.

If you really need pre-XP OS on your system, VMware baby. :)

That is the greatest program. I can play all my 95-98 games on my XP laptop, and I get a built in windowed mode to boot :)
