A potential and controversial solution to overpopulation.

An interesting finding just recently-the homosexual gene was found. Not in humans, but in mice. Questions regarding whether this is in anyway comparable to the human equivalent have been raised, but I'm more interested in the potential ramfications.

Their was a lot of concern that homosexual fetuses might be sought and aborted by conservatives-cum-choicers. I however think the alternative shouldbe considered and embraced, namely making homosexuality more common. It's probably the single best way of combating overpopulation- if half the population of a county is gay, then the birthrate will only be half what it otherwise would be.

Haven't you ever watched the Maury Povich Show ?

One "Baby Daddy" with nine different mothers and 25 babies in total, apparently there is another way to populate the world without worrying about a balanced ratio of one male for every one female. So even if most of the people become gay and also didn't want to have children the few people left could obviously take up the slack.

The solution is to ramp it up a bit. Instead of making "half" or even "most" people gay, make them all gay. They'd still be able to reproduce, they just wouldn't want to. So reproduction would only be deliberately pursued for the specific purpose of continuing the species, and not by accident.

There.

Nope. The single best way of combating overpopulation is education of women.

The conservatives have now resorted to detecting and aborting homosexual mice?
This is terrible. And will lead to a mouse epidemic that will provide unwelcome competition for all those foreign cheeses with funny names that conservatives like to flaunt after the dinner party.
What goes around comes around.

Flaunting one's pecorino is a marvelous way to add a touch of gaiety to an otherwise stuffy affair.

And that's a good thing.

Since a small number of men are already having most of the sex with almost all women I really wonder how this would change things.

Start co-locating genes for infertility with those for big breasts and doey eyes while sterilizing any guy that acts like a jerk and things would get interesting quickly. Think Children of Men type interesting.

Interessting: can you link the study because I was not aware we had found a "homosexual gene".

As far as I am aware no one has yet found a literal gay gene. However there is evidence being found that there are genetic trends and biological causes. Conditions in the womb would seem to be a strong factor leading to a trend of homosexuality in certain lines rather than a direct transfer of a gene, however there has also been at least one study where altering genetic material has increased homosexual behaviour in fruitflies (and its old news). There are a lot of studies on mice regarding hormone levels in utero and similar factors having profound effects on behaviour, but a not-so-quick google didn't pick up anything as a definitive as a gene. Maybe Rockingham could post where he found this info please?

Yes I have read quite a lot of stuff about the various hypotheses over quite a long period. That is why I am so interested in this claim: because to date I have never seen anything which supports the view that there is a gay gene: though I keep hearing about it in the papers and stuff

I question the premise on 2 grounds. One, there isn't a "gay gene," or rather, there isn't one single gene that can turn on or off homosexuality AFAIK. Also, like almost everything behavioral, there is also an environmental factor to sexual preference.

More importantly, overpopulation is only a normative problem for areas with limited land, like islands. Overpopulation isn't actually a global problem.

What I'm saying, is that calling overpopulation a "problem" is dishonest.

Reducing population growth is just an attempted solution to a different problem/set of problems: Low standard of living and freedom in the undeveloped world.

And the term itself is inherently negative to begin with: OVERpopulation. We should just be saying population growth.

An increase in population is actually good for the world. The more people we have, the more innovation and creativity we have in the world. We should embrace population growth, and try to solve the real problems.
