99 Ways to Tell a Story : Exercises in Style
Holy crap! What a fun book!
The author/illustrator tells the same one-page comic 99 different ways. The main character closes his laptop and goes to the refrigerator to get something to drink. His wife calls to him from upstairs to ask him what time it is. He yells back the time, but when he opens the fridge he forgets what he was there for.
It is a very basic story, one that you would think could be told in just a few different ways. But Madden shows us 99 completely different ways. Some are thought provoking, others are just downright funny (like "Paranoid Religious Tract" done in the style of--who else?--Jack Chick, with the faceless God figure and all).
I highly recommend it it anyone interested in not just comics, but writing and storytelling in general.
