IIRC, Guiness listed a still bigger one, a stillborn deformed baby at 27 pounds who, in less sensitive days, would have been described as a "monster".

I wonder if these babies just grew fast, or if the mothers' bodies just failed to start birthing the baby on time, kind of forgetting about it chemically.

It looks like a reason may be maternal overeating during pregnancy. Probably that baby will have increased chances of becoming an obese adult.
