Los Angeles (CNN) -- Michael Jackson died while preparing to set a world record for the most successful concert run, but he unknowingly set another record that led to his death. Jackson may be the only human ever to go two months without REM -- rapid eye movement -- sleep, which is vital to keep...
It seems impossible to register in our memory the exact moment we transition from awake to sleep.
How close to the moment you fall asleep do you remember ? Seconds ? Minutes ?
** split from another thread to avoid derail **
What I find especially frustrating is that we have the technology to put the brain into sleep mode in less than 30 minutes. But we can't do so in a way that doesn't have at least two of the following side-effects...
Feeling lousy/drowsy the...
(Wasn't sure if this is more suited to FC or SMMT, if a mod thinks it should move please don't hesitate.)
Hands up who here is currently operating on less than an hours sleep in the last 48 hours.
Sometimes I think this will kill me eventually. Nothing seems to work. Drugs just stop working...
Hi.
I'd like to know whether polyphasic sleep is a myth and a pseudoscience.
I have seen a lot of people talk about the uberman and the everyman sleeping schedule on the blogosphere and I would like to know the scientific opinion on these sleeping schedules and polyphasic sleep in general.
I've found conflicting advice about this. How much sleep do we need? Does it vary significantly from person to person? What's the optimal amount, for best functioning and good health?
An animal that does not sleep would be at a huge advantage over all other animals as animals are more vulnerable when asleep. Animals go through all the hassle of digging a burrow, or climbing a tree so they are safe when they sleep.
So why have none evolved to counter this large disadvantage...
I wanted to share this weird experience with you cause I'm wondering what exactly triggered.
When I was around 8 years old I used to get these weird episodes a couple times. I would all of a sudden wake up in the middle of the night, feeling like time was happening a little bit faster than...
A couple of years ago someone asked about sleep paralysis on a different bulletin board and I was surprised to learn that I was the only one (other than the frightened person who started the thread) who had much experience with it. I hadn't though that the typical person has had thousands of...
I, like many people who are still up at this unEdly hour and sober, suffer from insomnia. To help me out, a friend of mine gave me some tablets that he said help you sleep. I only gave the packaging a cursory look before I accepted, enough to see that it was called "Sleep Aid", a promising name...
Is this a hoax or something. As scientifically speaking going without sleep for 33 years is not possible he should be dead, however he perfectly healthy. Sleep deprivation studies show going without sleep for a couple of days are harmful, so how can a person survive in perfect health for 33...
From wiki & imdb
Wes Craven states that the film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the LA times on a group of Cambodian refugees and their children, who, after fleeing to America from Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge regime, were suffering horrific nightmares, after which they refused...
I know this question probably can't be answered but I'll ask anyway in case someone knows something I'm unaware of.
Last night I went to sleep at 5:30AM and woke up at 9 AM. Today I went for my recently started three time a week jog. Now of course the predictable happened, I wasn’t able to jog...
How much sleep does a child (let's say 5 years old) need? Are there any studies or research treating that subject? What do schools recommend as being too little sleep and too much sleep? Are naps appropriate after returning from school, for instance?
I am trying to determine the time I should...
Sometimes when I am having trouble falling asleep I hear voices, now they are not talking to me and don't really make sense, they are just randomly assorted words part of my brain throws out. I figure this is a slightly odd abnormal sleep state issue. I was just wondering if this happens to...
How much sleep does the human being really need? Is it absolutley true that working shift work changing sleep patterns every week is severely detrimental to ones health?
Are naps really worthwhile? Would sleeping 12hours a day in 1 hour portions be better for you than sleeping one 6 hour...
Hi all, read the interesting post from the other day, and thought I should add my experience in a new thread.
There was a period where I would frequently experience these terrifying events- even had one where there was a horrific witch-like apparition floating above my face pummeling me.
What...
Does anyone feel like you know that you are dreaming but you dont care, or that something in your brain stops you from doing anything?
I understand that it is possible to have lucid dreams, has anyone had luck acheiving this?
I have also been interested by the integration of your outside...
Some time in 2002, I was resting on my bed in my army camp, about to sleep and somehow there was a numb sensation all over me, and suddenly I found out that I couldn't move my face and it was as if some unknown force was threatening to rip the left side of my face apart from my mouth to my...

That is a great link for all kinds of information and history on the concept.
I suffered from it for a long time, starting at age 17.
I still have aware sleep paralysis happen to me a handful of times a year. I have, however, learned to avoid...
This happened last night/early this morning (around 2 am). I was sleeping on my right side. I awoke, sort of. This is a frequent thing for me ~ I semi-awaken several times each night and merely rolling over and turning on talk radio puts me back to sleep.
But last night something was...
Humans have to sleep, but why do we get this fatigue, after certain amount of physical and/or mental strain? If we have heavy emotional stress, how can it take so much energy - or is it just an impression of such energy loss, maybe even illusion?
