Rand Paul: Federal Debt causes price increases

Reading into the whole--I suppose libertarian narrative--arguments over debt and inflation, which was Rand Paul's arguments on his NPR interview, I could only conclude that the man is truly an idiot. These comments were immediately after he was asked to explain Obama's re-election victory, as...

The euro was a mistake it seems. Is inflation the cure?

Euro Was Flawed at Birth and Should Break Apart Now It seems there is indeed a major problem (or problems) with the euro, but I don't agree with the author's proposed solution (a simultaneous withdrawal from the euro) because I think it is unworkable. A much better solution IMHO would be to...

China says falling US Dollar is causing their inflation

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/China-official-dollar-apf-1263355013.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=6&asset=&ccode= Never mind that the a falling USD would only impact the price of commodities in China if their currency is pinned to the USD... (edit: to a first approximation, anyway)

    The case for higher inflation

In the world of economics, there are a lot of trade-offs, and many economic clouds have silver linings. However, people don't always see the silver linings. Take a weak currency for example: Most Americans assume that a weak dollar is bad for America. At the same time, most Americans assume...

    Inflation: WHEN? HOW MUCH?

So, when will we get inflation and how much inflation will we get? My WAG: 2010 and about 2% to 3%. I don't expect inflation in excess of 4% for any full year for the next 3 years. Apparantly some people disagree however.

U.S. Needs More Inflation to Speed Recovery, Say Mankiw, Rogoff

U.S. Needs More Inflation to Speed Recovery, Say Mankiw, Rogoff Sounds right to me, assuming that the Fed can actually control inflation at the desired level. I don't know how much control they actually have. Assuming that the Fed wanted 6% inflation +/-1% or so, could they reliably do that...

How much inflation will the bailout cause?

Has anyone yet estimated how much inflation will result from this 700 billion dollar bailout? I assume that taxes will not be raised to pay for it, so it will be paid for by inflation. An extra 1%, 5%, more?

    Threatening Petroeuro?

There is a rumor that the Invasion of Iraq had something to do with Saddam's plans to switch to the Petroeuro which allegedly would have threatened the US economy. Now I'm not very familiar with the Petrodollar/Petroeuro system - what would have been/would be the damage for the US economy if...

    Odd post about inflation

http://science.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=242453&threshold=0&commentsort=0&mode=thread&cid=19675295 Hmm. This sounds rather glib to me. I'm not an economist, but this sounds like the kind of thing that might sound ok, but forgets some basics.

Minimum wage to go up considerably over next 3 years: Good or bad idea?

Won't this merely cause everyone else to want more money so that they can keep ahead of minimum wage earners wages by the same percentage? And won't this then defeat the purpose of the wage hike? And won't this just merely cause everything we buy to require more cash? If someone like me...

    Inflation

I don't know what's happening in the rest of the world, but fresh food seems to have shot up in price recently. I doubt it's just the hurricane here that's the cause. If inflation does go up, then, according to orthodox economic thought, interest rates should not be far behind.

    Homeopathic Educational Inflation

They have a poll at Hpathy showing that 42% of the respondents (yeah, not necessarily a reliable indicator) are either self-taught or distant learners. This rather gives the lie to NHCoraHsarah's lofty pronouncements on the educational achievements of these retailers of sugar and water.

    Threat of inflation looming

SHADY SIDE, Md. - Soaring fuel costs, rising interest rates and creeping retail prices are hitting American pocketbooks in a combination unseen since the early '80s. Inflation isn't anywhere near the 13.5 percent peak of 1980, but it's rising worrisomely as the economy suffers many strains...
