Does anyone know what non-religious explanations were given to explain human origins before the idea of Darwinian evolution became commonly available? Were religious explanations basically the only game in town say a mere 200 years ago?

Story here. As a layman, I see lots of questions to ask, but I'm interested in the views of the real scientists (especially cognitive ones) on this board. I'm also interested in the views of non-scientists on this board. Legit? Too soon to tell? The sign of humanity's downfall?
