In the thread about the Chinese building collapse, GreyICE posted this which linked to a "HowStuffWorks" article. That article mentioned a putative reason for glass' transparency having to do with atomic/molecular "looseness" and further linked to another HSW article.
The article spoke of the...

is a bullet hole that is bug enough to "put a pencil through"
upon further, closer-upper review, this is that "bullet hole"
Now, i give Rev91 a shot at proving that the above image is in fact, a hole in glass made...
Okay, I'm just hoping that someone here can give me an explanation of how/why this works. Got sent a link to a video that shows how throwing a large brick at a car window doesn't even crack it, but throwing just a small piece of ceramic from a spark plug makes it shatter. Thought it was just...
As a fan of glass artistry and a fan of critters, this confluence of art and science pleases me to no end.

I was talking to an Australian friend a few days ago, and she reckoned that on a long trip across Sunny Parts of the country she'd got quite a bad sunburn. Not because she was hanging out of the open window, but just because the sun was so relentless through the glass.
I was a bit surprised...
Ok, this is kind of a weird question but is transparent fruit possible? I know of none but this doesn't mean it's impossible. Jellyfish are quite clear and are alive. Could a fruit be as clear as glass without having a size restriction on them; like wouldn't have to be as small as a blueberry...
I'm just wondering, because, yes, a piece of glass is hard, but it's also transparent...
My thought is it wouldn't see it, unless it reflected the particular frequency the CT-scan operated on.
What's your thought?

Does it? I thought not, but recently I've seen it repeated in a pop science book - glass is a liquid. The example given is that of mediaeval cathedral glass. If you remove a pane, you'll find that it is thicker at the bottom than at the top.
To me, this speaks more of the way mediaeval glass...
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld says most suspected terrorists at a U.S. prison camp in Cuba will probably be detained for the course of the global war on terrorism rather than face trial.

Hi,
Any idea if walking on burning coles, smashed glass, sharp nails, holding hands in fire, etc :j2: ... ( without any consequences, of course ) does qualify?
Thanx
