Should prisoners have a "right" to porn?

Thirty years in the electric chair.
That'll take their nasty little minds of dirty pictures.

Really- I can't see why whatever regs apply to books of any sort should not apply equally to porn. But I'd expect the prisoners to clean up.

If they're allowed to have other books, magazines, and movies then yes. Shouldn't matter what the content is.

Aren't there more proactive measures that can be taken to prevent rape than this? I don't know, I really am asking.

We have looked at the empirical evidence of the well-known feminist dictum: "pornography is the theory--rape is the practice" (Morgan, 1980). While earlier research, notably that generated by the U.S. Commission on Obscenity and Pornography (1970) had found no evidence of a causal link between pornography and rape, a new generation of behavioral scientists have, for more than a decade, made considerable effort to prove such a connection, especially as far as "aggressive pornography" is concerned. The first part of the article examines and discusses the findings of this new research. A number of laboratory experiments have been conducted, much akin to the types of experiments developed by researchers of the effects of nonsexual media violence. As in the latter, a certain degree of increased "aggressiveness" has been found under certain circumstances, but to extrapolate from such laboratory effects to the commission of rape in real life is dubious. Studies of rapists' and nonrapists' immediate sexual reactions to presentations of pornography showed generally greater arousal to non-violent scenes, and no difference can be found in this regard between convicted rapists, nonsexual criminals and noncriminal males. In the second part of the paper an attempt was made to study the necessary precondition for a substantial causal relationship between the availability of pornography, including aggressive pornography, and rape--namely, that obviously increased availability of such material was followed by an increase in cases of reported rape. The development of rape and attempted rape during the period 1964-1984 was studied in four countries: the U.S.A., Denmark, Sweden and West Germany. In all four countries there is clear and undisputed evidence that during this period the availability of various forms of pictorial pornography including violent/dominant varieties (in the form of picture magazines, and films/videos used at home or shown in arcades or cinemas) has developed from extreme scarcity to relative abundance. If (violent) pornography causes rape, this exceptional development in the availability of (violent) pornography should definitely somehow influence the rape statistics. Since, however, the rape figures could not simply be expected to remain steady during the period in question (when it is well known that most other crimes increased considerably), the development of rape rates was compared with that of non-sexual violent offences and nonviolent sexual offences (in so far as available statistics permitted). The results showed that in none of the countries did rape increase more than nonsexual violent crimes. This finding in itself would seem sufficient to discard the hypothesis that pornography causes rape

First study I found that addressed the issue. Not exactly a systematic review but hey at least it's something more than Bare Assertion.

Convicts are imprisoned as part of their sentence. That's the sentence... Removal from society and confinement. Dehumanizing them during incarceration is not the goal of the confinement, quite the opposite in fact. It is expected that one day the prisoner will re-enter society and the intent is that he will assimilate properly and conduct himself appropriately. While their stay in prison is not supposed to be preferable to freedom, there are certain luxuries that can help maintain their humanity while incarcerated.

Many of their rights are lost while confined, but other rights are still afforded, such as food, exercise, suitable sleeping quarters, educational pursuits, etc. These are the basic needs for survival. They also have certain privileges which allow them to retain their humanity, such as limited internet, television, telephone access, etc. These privileges can help them to retain their sanity during confinement. Eventually they're going to be released back into society, and the more dehumanized they became during confinement, the less likely they'll become productive members of society upon release. Being removed from society as punishment has more affects on the human psyche than simply “learning your lesson”, and granting some of these basic privileges can help to offset the bad affects.

I think that things like porn could fall in the same category as some of these privileges by adding a degree of normalcy to their environment, allowing them to maintain what humanity they had when they initially entered the system. Masturbation is a very normal activity in humans, and allowing some masturbatory aids which are already acceptable in our society may be emotionally healthy for prisoners. I’m open to discussion on that idea, but my initial thoughts on the matter are that it seems more healthy for them to have some level of porn than for them to not be allowed porn at all. Ultimately, the healthier our prisoners are when they are released, the better off society will be as a whole.

Of course there's no compelling reason to allow porn in prison. Prisoners have access to movies, television, radio, sports, on some occasions video games, fitness equipment, vocational education and activities, and religious services; but our argument that porn should be permitted as well is that it's necessary in order to allow them to retain 'a little of their humanity'? Because the rest of those things don't?

Jesus, if the only difference that there should be between prison and regular life is that prisoners aren't allowed to leave the premises, why on earth don't we just put every convicted criminal on simple house arrest and reappeopriate hundreds of millions of dollars?

I dunno... would think there'd be one or two fewer butt-rapes on average per day if they had access to spank mags.

But, c'est la vie in prison. Lift weights, eat your squares, mule a bag of rocks in your...

...*loses himself in memories of the several times he almost went to prison*

Considering prison rape, for the vast majority is done as revenge intimidation or punishment, the minority being consensual, or forced sex for sex's sake. I don't think, either way it is going to effect that.

There's no shortage of research linking viewing pornography with sexually violent acts and recidivism for sex offenders. So, no they should not have access to pornography.

Note the absence of the phrases" well done" and "properly controlled" from the post.

Problem is though, highly sought after items will become currency and the impetus for "trickbags" , violence and coercion.

A copy of flim flam is going to hold little interest for the prison at large, but a copy of hustler is going to be something someone is willing to throw a punch, or threat to get.

There are bigger issues here than jackin' off.

That sounds like an argument for allowing porn.

Yes. Once they masturbated, they are less likely to try and rape someone.

Oops, Aepervius beat me to it.

I'd like to see this corroborated.

Are we to believe there's a finite and slowly-filling 'container' for sex drive; that once it is full one is uncontrollably compelled to have sex (forcefully if no other options are available), and that this container is emptied by masturbating and takes a while to fill back up again, during which time we don't have to worry about that individual violently raping anyone? I don't believe in the existence of such a container.

Michigan Inmate Sues State Over Prison's Porn Ban

I'm all for treating criminals like criminals and not exactly shedding a tear per se, but seems to me that the more they have access to this, the less likely prison gang bangs/etc they would generally tend to have. So if nothing else it seems this is a dumb move for practical reasons and not about whether they "deserve" it in some way.

prisoners have no rights nor should except to made the object of medical experiments and soylent green, and I may have said this for shock value.

It's really not a rights issue for me; I simply believe they should have any cheap luxuries that reduces the tension that leads to the massive numbers of rapes, assaults and murders within the prison system.

If old video game systems, porn and a once a month McDonalds order-in reduces Joe Schmo's chance of being sodomized and shanked then i say it is a good thing.
