Cont: Cancel culture IRL Part 2

you know, if i had spent a significant amount of time defending chapelle and used him to validate my stance on cancel culture, i'd be pissed.

but i already don't like most of those guys. pete davidson couldn't stop talking about his dead in 9/11 dad, and he went and signed the same crap. probably the most offensive participant imo

most of the people involved were already total trash hypocrites, so no surpise there. chappelle, kevin hart, chris tucker, aziz ansari, just a bunch of hacky losers or walking brand deals imo. whitney cummings, mark normand, sam morril, andrew schulz, andrew santino, tom segura, no surprises there from some of the most pathetic comics in the history of the sport. bill burr obviously shocked a lot of people with his participation, big talker but he was pretty cheap to buy.

only one i really liked on that list was hannibal buress.

I’m interested to see if Chappelle goes after Kirk like he goes after trans people.

He talks tough about free speech when it’s a soft target like a marginalized community with no institutional power.

Let’s see how tough he is when the threat is an organized censorship campaign from an authoritarian government and not just people criticizing him on social media.

My bet is that he pulls his punches, if he throws any at all, but I’m willing to be surprised.

It's fascinating how USAians expouse "free speech" while their Rapist-in-Chief and his cronies;
  1. force a private company to suspend Jimmy Kimmel for comments he made about the alleged killer of Kirk.
  2. repeatedly threaten media networks with losing their broadcast licences if they dare to say things Trump doesn’t like.
  3. vowed to prosecute “hate speech” that is actually fully protected under the USAian constitution
  4. declared "antifa" a "terrorist organisation" in an indiscriminate attack on a political belief
  5. tried to force journalists covering the Pentagon to accept to restrictions on their reporting or have their access revoked.
The silence is deafening.
Are you saying because I'm "USAian" I'm not allowed to "expouse" on free speech issues outside of the USA because of problems within the USA? I'm perfectly capable of condemning both.

Dave Chappelle is facing major backlash after using his set at the Riyadh Comedy Festival to make pointed jokes about CharlieKirk's assassination and the state of free speech in America. The comedian, who has long been criticized...

The audience reportedly took notice as the comic's set went beyond Kirk, with sharp political jokes targeting both Donald Trump and commentary on JimmyKimmel's suspension. Chappelle then doubled down on his stance about free speech abroad, saying, "It's easier to talk here than it is in America." He even suggested he feared reprisal in the U.S. over his criticisms of Israel's handling of the Gaza conflict, expressing, "They're going to do something to me so that I can't say what I want to say."

I cannot find his specific comments about Trump or Kirk. (at a guess there is a media blackout of specific jokes, because his set will be released on streaming at some point.)

Not at all. I am commenting on the ignorant and defensive hypocrisy displayed by many USAians.

That seems to be what I’ve seen elsewhere already which is him only mentioning Kirk within the context of talking about free speech. That’s not him going after Kirk.

Let’s see if he had anything else to say about Kirk directly once the whole set is available.

these hack guys aren’t funny. they don’t get laughs anymore, they get cheers of agreement when they say something ◊◊◊◊◊◊. they confused that with being funny. and the fact they all released 3 netflix “specials” and podcast six hours a day means you’re not going to hear an original thought in any of their sets.

if it’s not blindingly obvious they were playing you guys the whole time, it probably should have been when theo von and tony hinchcliffe had jd vance on talking about how cool of a guy he is. joe rogan became friends with peter thiel, thinks we need jesus in our lives, and they were all invited to trump’s inauguration.

but it’s these oil guys just buying all the western entertainment and having them do it there is wild. they’re just like buying sports and comedy. it’s weird.
An Aussie comedian gets you.

i think people should probably decide that for themselves.

first of all, i'm not familiar with all 50 of those comics so who knows. for quite a few of them, i don't think you can get away with acting like they were modern day free speech champions since the covid lockdowns, act the way the day after with the whole comedy mothership austin scene, then go and take a few million dollars from the saudi oil shieks and perform a state sponsored exercise in selling out and self censoring, then come back and act like you did it all for freedom of speech still.

at some point, stuff needs to matter

It seems egregious that they'd refuse donations from comics unless those comics criticise Saudi, while performing in Saudi. I mean, I'm all for criticizing Saudi... but I also get maybe wanting to be in the US when you do it, for purely pragmatic reasons.

it’s just current event news about the free speech brigade of yesteryear and how their quest for free speech is going now.

but yeah a lot of people are pissed.

You frame this as if these comics have no choice where they perform.

the whole thing with these comics is that they didn't want to get cut off from the ad revenue. it had nothing to do with free speech. and they prove it every time when they self censor their youtube videos so they don't get demonetized and take money from saudi princes while signing agreements on what they won't talk about. then they act like they're fighting for free speech by doing this stuff.

what they won't do is pay for their own bandwidth so they don't have to censor. but they want the free hosting and the ad revenue and the sponsorship deals.

Agreed! Just tryna figure how they relate back to the topic.

I've no doubt that someone, somewhere is hoping to get at least of few of them deplatformed.

If there's one thing that keeps me up at night, it's the thought someone, somewhere is hoping for a thing that I don't like. I say this as an emotionally-healthy adult.

But if these comics were actually true to the principles of free speech they claimed to espouse, they wouldn't have to worry about their livelihoods being impacted by other people expressing their rights to free speech and free association. Karma's a bitch.

It's like when Jeff Dunham did a tour that included a Muslim country and he couldn't refer to one of his puppets as being Muslim or use his name Achmed.
He once stated that he didn't care if people objected to his act. My first thought was "So you're going to bring back Sweet Daddy Dee?"
(An abandoned puppet that was a racist caricature black pimp.)
