Shooting/attack on Michigan LDS Church

Is joining LDS a hard or lengthy process? Is it conceivable that the
Mormons might reject someone's attempt to join? Can a Mormon challenge
church discipline? How often do Mormons publically denounce abuses
by elders, and what might be the outcome?

I'm wondering what sort of things might drive a proselyte or
full church member to do what this man did.

A lot of Protestent Fundies really hate the LDS for purely religious reasons. LDS theology directly clashes with Traditional Christian thelogy big time.
I was taught that Mormons were literally Satanists. In that they literally worshipped the literal Satan behind closed doors in their secret chambers. I was also taught that Catholics were literally Satanists, and the Pope was the literal Antichrist. Of course, that was three popes ago now, so I wonder how that's been working out.

I see the perpetrator was a former marine.

I wonder if this will in any way temper Hegseth's pep talk about the benefits of a furious "warrior ethos" as he tries to ginger up all his generals.

Not just an ex-marine, but there are photos of him wearing Trump 2020 "Make Liberals Cry" t-shirt and reports that he was a long-term, repeat Trump voter.

But no doubt all that is flase flag nonsense and he was really a trans black Democrat far left commie...

In a surprising turn of events, it seems like the shooter was pretty right wing, at least judging by his political signs and facebook posts. Bluesky thread

Funny thing is, Satanists* are Christian too. They need the shared theological context to invert.

*The straw Satanists only existing in the minds of people who accuse other people of being Satanists, of course. Neither flavor of actual Satanist believe in an actual Satan.

[ETA] Aw, ninjad. I blame Satan!

I prefer Lucifer or Mephistopheles, for the classical literary allusions...

How do you prosecute a dead man?

Leavitt on Michigan shooting: "As the president rightfully put in his Truth Social yesterday, this appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians. And the Trump administration is fully committed to not only investigating these crimes but prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law."

I presume she's talking about other crimes that they might want to characterize a similar way based on whatever random demographic fits the Trump regime's propaganda. Christian grievance seems to be big part of this regime's Christian Nationalist agenda. Historically speaking (i.e., the 1800s), the people most likely to commit violence against Mormons have been Christians, for religious as well as political reasons. And as many have pointed out, there's a lot of residual infighting between Mormons and other Christian religions.

The evidence we have in hand suggests it was a targeted, premeditated crime. But it doesn't give us information to differentiate among target motives. Did this person have a problem with Mormons in general? With this particular congregation? With certain people in the congregation? If the perpetrator wanted to send a message against Christians, as the press secretary suggests, why choose a congregation whose identity as Christians is in question among Christianity as a whole?

Death toll up to 4 now, with 8 injured.
The death toll is expected to increase as searchers clear the rubble from the fire. The search was suspended during the night due to darkness. There are something like 7 unaccounted for, although the FBI warns that these may simply be survivors who have not yet contacted anyone to report that they are safe.

The building is a total loss, but the cost of replacement will be borne by the church headquarters. It's not like they're hurting for money.

A lot of comments from 'Christians' on the thread link I posted are similar to this example

Rebelcat
@Homepage2Maga
They are NOT Christians. They have another scripture and they think Jesus is the brother of Satan. I'm sad about what happened to them but I will not mince words. Mormons are a CULT.
