Merged USAID: is it really a bunch of crazy leftists? / Trump Was Absolutely Right to Shut Down USAID

There is no shop for international aid and cooperation where you can just buy as much as you need when you need it - a funding freeze destroys trust, expertise, networks, which will be time and money consuming to reestablish.
Given that all these programs could be paid for if Musk or Trump would just pay their taxes, and it's obvious that this is about scapegoating, not saving money.

USA foreign aid can help establish new markets for the USA, stopping it in such a manner however will turn folk away from the USA for decades to come.

We don't need their rare earth minerals! The ones that are necessary for building smartphones and computers, we'll do just fine without those things! I mean, who even uses phones and computers? Nobody, that's who!
 
Bear with me here... my memory is extremely fuzzy on some of the details. (If someone else remembers this I appreciate it.)

I remember some sort congressional meeting (could have been a conformation hearing) where they were interviewing a high ranking individual (Might have been a General.) The subject of foreign aid came up.

He argued that there is a choice... the government can either spend the money NOW on foreign aid (which helps stabilize various hot-spots in the world, earns the US good will and helps build alliances) or they can spend more money later on for bullets, as the US might end up having to deal militarily with situations that could have been diffused earlier with foreign aid.

The GOP doesn't understand this. Same way they don't understand that having universal health care so people can get treatment right away is far cheaper for a state than having people wait until their conditions have grown so bad that they have to be treated.

Nope, they don't. Relationships abroad cost money. What happens over there can and often does affect what happens to us. There was this great scene in The West Wing where Danny Concannon explains why the White House lost its fight on a foreign aid bill. Nobody wants to feed starving mouths in Botswana when we have starving mouths to feed here.

But there is a cost for not feeding those mouths which is ignored. Foreign Aid is an investment into the future. It's an investment into a relationship. Whose side will they come down on some time in the future? Not offering a little while we can can cost more American money and American lives in the future.

I'd say an additional factor is that people are much less resentful towards those who never extended aid in the first place than they are to those who extended aid and then withdrew it. By doing this we're not turning friends neutral, we're turning them hostile.
