Sounds like the Aussie knife-wielder will have a gun soon.

I'm curious--if there's so much fear of theft in some areas, doesn't that mean the criminals are well armed with stolen guns? How is that controlled? That's really the heart of the problem, the criminals with guns, not the people murdering clay pigeons.

Yes, there are armed crims with guns, most often bikie gangs. However not all crims are stupid but they are usually lazy. So they will always get guns from the "easiest" sources. Beating our borders to smuggle stuff in is easy - we simply don't have the resources to patrol our coastline or search every ship or boat that touches shore (remember: we are an island). So guess where the easiest source of illegal guns coming into Australia is... Correct, the USA. They just buy them over the counter there and smuggle them into here. So thanks, USA's 2A! You just negatively affected us! [insert extreme sarcasm smilie here]

I own more than 20 firearms, none of them explicitly for self-protection and I think using firearms for self-protection is heavily hyped and high over-rated.

Now, if I lived in Alaskan Bear and Moose country I would have firearm(s) specifically for self-protection - but that probably isn't what you are thinking of.

No. If you are a woman, or elderly, or simply physically weak, then you are protecting yourself against criminals with knives, or baseball bats, or even simply their fists. A 200 lb 25 year old man can very easily kill a 100 lb 60 year old woman even without a weapon.

Are you completely unaware of Cain's posting style after all these years? He is anti-gun and is being sarcastic.

And no, other people with guns are not the only people I may need to protect myself from. I'm getting close to 50 years old and have no interest whatsoever in getting in a "fair" fight with random street thugs who want to take my stuff and beat the living hell out of me (or worse) in the process, either out in the street or in my own home or property.

And there are criminals with guns in Oz, so your statement that they don't have them is simply not true.
