Limbaugh has thoughts on Ebola, border security

I read in the news that the US has sent about 500 100 Marines to Liberia, for reasons I suspect are linked to fighting the Ebola virus.

...
.
I have to say those poor gobs have just gone to the last country they will ever go to!
Leave EVERYTHING they took with them there also!

Just a thought: tanks and guns and planes ain't gonna stop Ebola. The soldiers who follow up ... are likely to be at risk of infection. Hmmmm. Glad I'm not an Army medic.

Then again, we send off Marines and soldiers on all sorts of humanitarian missions, because we have Marines and soldiers need to keep them busy so they don't get bored.

EDIT: sorry, 100 Marines.

Travis: Rush Limbaugh is probably the best paid troll in America. Why does he get paid so well? People like you keep leaping upon the bait he dangles. You are helping him make money.

I know people that actually think Limbaugh is a misunderstood genius and tend to take his proclamations as marching orders. Just because WE think he is a troll doesn't mean there aren't people out there that do not.

Troll or none... there's a difference between representing what the guy said wrongly, and seeing what he actually said in context. I can do without the extracurricular hype

Let it be said that I am not a Rush fan, but that his comments are misrepresented extremely frequently. It's to the point that when I see a thread like this, I know already that the reality is completely different that what's being represented.

Also, I wonder why so many think he's a troll. I don't...I think he actually believes the things he says.

My read on Rush is that he's very cynical, and likes to say stuff that get people to pay attention to him.

The pointy end of the stick is the least useful element for this mission which is why combat engineers, support battalion and headquarters troops are going; also, Seabees.

When I was still in the national guard I was in a support battalion that was trained up for a secondary function of disaster/emergency response. We learned how to don and doff the groogleman suit and decontaminate casualties brought from a "hot zone" and pass them off to medics. Any troops with any MOS can be used in this way and the training is already developed to turn PVT or CPT Snuffy into a certified (yes, certified as in go/no-go testing to meet specific standards) decon worker.

I'm increasingly irritated by the recurring theme that sending troops somewhere by definition means guns. It doesn't.

And, thus, should be executed.

But he's not the problem. His audience is. Unfortunately, you can neither cure nor outlaw foolishness, it's even more a part of the human condition than greed is. His audience is a huge open wound being dragged around in dirt, Rush is just one of the many parasites that happens to be infesting it at the moment. Remove him, and more will take his place.

Right-wingers are arguing that political correctness is now literally killing us. We'd rather not be perceived as "racist" than shut down the borders (or at least limit all travel from Africa).

In other news, Ebola is a great name for a virus. Take note, SARS.

It does mean that we should quarantine the outbreak to stop its spread. Except if it violates some liberal principle, of course.
What do you mean by "quarantine"? Sealing the borders?

Speaking of skepticism, are there...

  1. ...any health experts that are saying that there is a clear and present danger or, any experts that are saying that there is a clear and not in the too distant future danger?
  2. any health experts who are saying that we can significantly reduce the risk of Ebola by closing borders or restricting flights?
You will excuse me but skepticism causes me to get information about public health from someone other than Limbaugh.

Ebola-Fearing Fox News Host Schooled on the pragmatic realities of Ebola by a Public Health official.

I think if more people understood that not all viruses are airborne-transmitted, there would be a lot less panic. Were you on a plane with an Ebola carrier? OMG! Wait, did you lick them? You didn't? Oh, never mind.

It is scary how many "true Americans" have no qualms about denying the right to freedom of movement and the right to come home; who want to incarcerate US citizens simply because they MAY have been near where somebody had what could possibly be Ebola. ..

Americans riot when their football team wins , of course we go fascist batcrap at the notion of plagues, or hurricanes, or iPhone launches. The real surprise is that there aren't a lot more panic-inspired mass disasters.

I'm waiting the mass panic at the Mall when someone coughs in the Food Court!
